6 Days: Vegas and Nevada Parks
Six days from a Strip base covers all five Nevada day trips from our 5-day plan , then adds a genuine repeat-visitor pivot: Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, a historic working ranch a few minutes past Red Rock Canyon most first-timers skip entirely. For the full week, see the 7-day version.

Day 1: Hoover Dam and Lake Mead
Shortest drive of the six, 45 minutes southeast. Visitor Center $15 adult / $12 ages 4-16; add the Power Plant Tour (roughly $25-30) or the Guided Dam Tour (roughly $40) if booked ahead. Walking the crest is free. Current tour times are on the official Hoover Dam tours page . Back on the Strip for dinner.
Day 2: Red Rock Canyon
17 miles west, 20-30 minutes. October through May needs a $2 timed-entry reservation plus a $15 per-vehicle fee. Drive the 13-mile Scenic Drive and add Calico Tanks (2.5 miles round trip). Day 3: Valley of Fire
50-60 minutes northeast, Nevada’s oldest state park. Entrance $15/vehicle non-resident ($10 resident). Rainbow Vista, the Fire Wave, and White Domes cover the highlights and the roughly 2,000-year-old petroglyphs in about half a day. Current hours are on the Valley of Fire State Park page .
Day 4: Mount Charleston
45 minutes northwest; Charleston Peak tops out at 11,916 feet and runs 20-30 degrees cooler than the Strip. Hiking is free. Pick a shorter forest loop over a summit attempt (16-21 miles round trip) and pack a layer. Trail conditions are on the Spring Mountains NRA site .
Day 5: Seven Magic Mountains and Lake Mead
Seven Magic Mountains, 20-25 minutes south, is free and takes 20-30 minutes, Ugo Rondinone’s neon boulder installation has been extended through at least May 2027 (background on the official Seven Magic Mountains site ). Loop back to Lake Mead for boating or a slower shoreline afternoon.
Is Six Days Too Much Driving for One Trip?
It’s a genuine consideration. Five of the six days involve at least 40 minutes each way, and by day 4 or 5, fatigue is real. Building in a pool morning or a late start on day 6, rather than another 6am departure, keeps the back half of this trip from feeling like a commute.
Day 6: Spring Mountain Ranch State Park
Morning
Spring Mountain Ranch State Park sits 17-20 miles west on NV-159, a few minutes past the main Red Rock Canyon entrance, roughly 25-30 minutes from the Strip. Entrance runs $10 per vehicle, $2 for walk-ins or cyclists. Hours run 8am-8pm in summer, shrinking to 8am-4:30pm November through February, worth checking ahead on the Spring Mountain Ranch page since they shift by month.
Afternoon
The ranch’s historic buildings, once owned by Vera Krupp and later Howard Hughes, sit in a genuinely lush spring-fed meadow that looks nothing like the surrounding desert. Docent-led house tours run seasonally; the grounds and picnic areas are open regardless. Pair it with Calico Basin, a quieter bouldering and short-trail area just north of the main Red Rock entrance, for a low-key close to the trip.
Evening
Last dinner back on the Strip. Six days of desert driving is a real accomplishment; treat this one as a wind-down rather than another full-throttle day.
Why Visit Spring Mountain Ranch Instead of Doing Red Rock Canyon Again?
Because it’s a genuinely different experience in the same neighborhood: a shaded historic ranch and meadow instead of a desert scenic drive. For a repeat visitor who already drove the Red Rock loop on day 2, this covers new ground without a longer drive, rather than repeating a trip already checked off.
Check Spring Mountain Ranch’s seasonal hours before day 6; the November-February closing time (4:30pm) is nearly four hours earlier than summer, and showing up late defeats the point of a slow final day.
