Day 1: Bridges and the Old Town

  • Morning: Prešeren Square, France Prešeren’s statue and the pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, then the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje), Plečnik’s 1930s reworking of a single older stone bridge into three spans
  • Midday: The car-free Old Town (Stari trg, Mestni trg, Gornji trg), pedestrian since 2007
  • Afternoon: The Ljubljanica embankments to Dragon Bridge (Zmajski most), 1901, early reinforced concrete, four bronze dragons and the city’s founding legend
  • Evening: Struklji at Gostilna na Gradu or Druga Violina, EUR 12-20 a main; on a fair-weather Friday between late March and October, go to Odprta Kuhna instead

Day 2: The Castle and Metelkova by Night

  • Morning: Ljubljana Castle, funicular (EUR 3.30 one-way, EUR 6 return) or the free 10-15 minute path. Book the EUR 15 complex ticket ahead on GetYourGuide , full tiers on the official castle site
  • Midday: Central Market, Plečnik’s riverside colonnade, Monday-Saturday, EUR 8-12 for lunch
  • Afternoon: A riverside coffee instead of the paid boat cruise, same view for less
  • Evening: Metelkova, alt-culture squat since 1993, street art, bars and clubs, free to walk through

Should you take the funicular or walk up to Ljubljana Castle? Walk if you have the time and decent weather, 10-15 minutes and free. Take the funicular if you are pressed for time or the day has turned hot; the complex ticket is required inside either way.

Day 3: Tivoli Park, Art Nouveau Streets, and a Wine Bar

  • Morning: Tivoli Park, roughly 5 square kilometers, Plečnik’s Jakopič Promenade, free and worth a couple of unhurried hours
  • Midday: Lunch in Center, then Miklošičeva cesta, the Secession-era district anchored by the Grand Hotel Union
  • Afternoon: The Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MSUM), EUR 5 adult, or the National Gallery of Slovenia , EUR 8 adult for the permanent collection
  • Evening: Movia wine bar in the old City Hall building, Primorska producers worth the detour from beer

Day 4: Plečnik House and Trnovo by Bike

  • Morning: Plečnik House , the architect’s own home and studio, EUR 8 for the exhibition alone or EUR 12 with the guided tour, run by the city museums (MGML)
  • Midday: Register for BicikeLJ , EUR 1 for the week, and ride the river path upstream, the first hour of any single ride is free
  • Afternoon: Trnovo, quieter and more local than the center, a good neighborhood for a slow cafe stop
  • Evening: Dinner at a Trnovo neighborhood spot, a change of pace from the tourist-heavy Old Town restaurants

Do you need to book Plečnik House ahead? Booking ahead is smart in peak summer since the guided-tour slots are limited and the house itself is small; the exhibition-only ticket is more flexible if you would rather walk in without a reservation.

Day 5: The Zoo, the River, and Last-Minute Shopping

  • Morning: Ljubljana Zoo on Rožnik hill, roughly EUR 12 adult (verify current pricing on site), or skip the zoo and hike Rožnik hill itself for the view over the city instead
  • Midday: A Ljubljanica boat cruise if you skipped it earlier, EUR 14-20 for 45-60 minutes, or another riverside coffee
  • Afternoon: Last-minute souvenir shopping around the Central Market and Old Town
  • Evening: A farewell dinner back at a Struklji spot or Movia for a final glass before departure

Is 5 days too long for just Ljubljana? Not if you actually use the extra time rather than repeating Day 1 and 2. Plečnik House, BicikeLJ, Trnovo and the zoo are all genuine, distinct city content, not filler, and five unhurried days beat three rushed ones for most first-timers.
