7 Days in Ljubljana: First-Timer Itinerary

Day 1: Bridges and the Old Town

Day 2: The Castle and Metelkova by Night

Should you take the funicular or walk up to Ljubljana Castle? Walk if you have time and decent weather, 10-15 minutes and free. Take the funicular if you are pressed for time or the heat has you beat, either way the complex ticket is what gets you inside.

Day 3: Tivoli Park, Art Nouveau Streets, and a Wine Bar

  • Morning: Tivoli Park, roughly 5 square kilometers, Plečnik’s Jakopič Promenade
  • Midday: Lunch in Center, then Miklošičeva cesta, the Secession-era district anchored by the Grand Hotel Union
  • Afternoon: The Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MSUM), EUR 5 adult, or the National Gallery of Slovenia , EUR 8 adult

Day 6: The National Museum and a Slower Metelkova

  • Afternoon: Walk Metelkova in daylight, the street art reads completely differently without the nightlife crowd

Is 7 days too long for just Ljubljana? For most first-timers, yes, unless you genuinely want this pace. Day 7: Odprta Kuhna, the Market, and Departure

  • Morning: If it is a fair-weather Friday between late March and October, catch the tail end of Odprta Kuhna, the market square’s open-air food festival, 65-plus vendors and 280-plus dishes, 10am-10pm; any other day, a last relaxed visit to the Central Market covers the same ground
  • Afternoon: Final souvenir shopping around the Old Town and market stalls
  • Evening: A farewell dinner back at whichever restaurant from the week was best, then confirm transport to Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU, about 26km north, no rail link)

Build real buffer into departure day: the public bus runs roughly EUR 4.10-4.50 hourly, and a GoOpti shuttle seat booked a month ahead (EUR 12-15) beats a day-of booking (EUR 30-50+) every time, especially on a Friday when Odprta Kuhna traffic adds to the usual center congestion.
