3 Days in England: The First-Timer Itinerary
Three day trips from London, built on the same order as our 2-day plan : the Warner Bros Studio Tour first because it needs booking weeks out, Windsor Castle second, then a full day in Cambridge to close the trip. Need more days? See the 4-day through 7-day versions.
Book these before you go
- Warner Bros Studio Tour : entry from £56, zero walk-up tickets, lock in the date first
- Windsor Castle entry : £32 advance, £36 on the day, can close short notice for state visits
- King’s College Chapel : from £16.50, an early-bird discount rewards booking a week ahead
| Day | Day trip | Travel time from London |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Warner Bros Studio Tour, Leavesden | ~20 min train to Watford Junction, then a £3 shuttle |
| 2 | Windsor Castle | 22-28 min (Paddington/Slough) or 55 min direct (Waterloo) |
| 3 | Cambridge | 45-49 min direct from King’s Cross |
Day 1: Warner Bros Studio Tour
Start with the date you already had to lock in. Euston to Watford Junction runs about 20 minutes, then the dedicated shuttle bus straight to the Studio Tour, £3 return, card only, roughly every 30 minutes. Entry alone starts from £56, book through wbstudiotour.co.uk directly rather than a marked-up reseller. Budget the whole day, the sets and props genuinely fill five or more hours.
Day 2: Windsor Castle
Paddington to Slough then the branch line into Windsor & Eton Central runs 22-28 minutes, or go direct from Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside in about 55 minutes. Either station puts you a five to ten minute walk from the gate. Book Windsor Castle tickets or through rct.uk directly, £32 advance against £36 on the day. Arrive at opening to beat the 11am-2pm crowd surge, then walk the free three-mile Long Walk to the Copper Horse statue if there’s time left.
Day 3: Cambridge
King’s Cross to Cambridge runs 45-49 minutes direct, trains every 6-10 minutes, so there’s no need to lock in a specific departure ahead of time. King’s College Chapel entry runs from £16.50 on weekdays, £17.50 on weekends, with an early-bird discount for booking the week before. Add a shared punt on the River Cam, roughly £12-20 per person, for the signature Cambridge activity.
Is a single day enough for Cambridge?
Yes, this is the more achievable of the two university towns for a tight schedule. King’s College Chapel plus a punt plus lunch fills a satisfying day without rushing, and trains run frequently enough that you’re not locked to one departure time either way.
Before you go
None of these three days need a car. A contactless bank card or phone works exactly like an Oyster card on the London legs, same fares, same caps. Pack a proper umbrella regardless of season, and comfortable shoes matter most on Day 2, Windsor’s grounds are cobbled and the Long Walk runs three miles each way.
