Bath is the one England day trip on our whole list that deserves to stop being a day trip. It’s a straightforward 1 hour 15 direct run from Paddington to Bath Spa, easy enough to do there-and-back, but the Roman Baths and the Georgian streets around them reward a slower pace than a same-day return allows. Do it as a day trip if that’s all your schedule has, budget an overnight if you can find one.

Edinburgh looks like a day trip on the map. It isn’t one. LNER’s fastest King’s Cross to Edinburgh Waverley service runs about 4 hours 20 minutes each way, so a there-and-back day burns close to nine hours on trains before you’ve seen a single close on the Royal Mile. York and Cardiff really are that close, under 2 hours direct, and both still reward a single overnight over a rushed dash.
