6 Days in Lucerne: Adding Stanserhorn

This is the 5-day itinerary with a sixth day for Stanserhorn and a slower lake cruise, the fourth and final mountain excursion on this list.
Book these before you go
Day 1: The Old Town and the two bridges
Walk the Chapel Bridge, a partial 1993 reconstruction but still the defining sight, and the quieter Spreuerbrücke with its original “Dance of Death” panels. Visit the Lion Monument and Glacier Garden.
Rough cost for the day: the Glacier Garden runs around CHF 24 adult; a casual lunch runs CHF 25-40.
Concrete tip: climb a free Musegg Wall tower before dinner for the elevated view.
Day 2: Mount Pilatus, the Golden Round Trip
Bus to Kriens, aerial cableway up, the world’s steepest cogwheel railway down to Alpnachstad, boat back across the lake. Seasonal, roughly May through November.
Rough cost for the day: the full round trip runs around CHF 119.50-140 per adult.
Concrete tip: verify the current cogwheel schedule before you go.
Day 3: Mount Rigi, Europe’s first mountain railway
Reached from Vitznau, Arth-Goldau, or Weggis, opened in 1871, fully free with the Swiss Travel Pass.
Rough cost for the day: a standard return runs around CHF 78.
Concrete tip: pack a picnic, summit-restaurant prices run higher than in the city.
Day 4: Mount Titlis and Engelberg
Train to Engelberg, then a shuttle bus to the valley station. Year-round glacier terrain at the 3,020-meter summit, the Cliff Walk suspension bridge, and the Ice Flyer chairlift. The Rotair is closed 17 August to 11 December 2026, the Titlis Connect cable car substitutes during that window.
Rough cost for the day: a recent price point runs around CHF 96.
Concrete tip: dress for real winter conditions at the summit regardless of the season in Lucerne.
Day 5: Stanserhorn’s CabriO
Via the town of Stans, a historic funicular connects to the CabriO, the world’s only open-top double-decker cable car, roofless on its upper deck, up to the 1,898-meter summit. Runs roughly mid-April to mid-November.
Rough cost for the day: a return ticket runs around CHF 90 or more.
Concrete tip: sit on the open upper deck if the weather allows it, the enclosed lower deck is the fallback for rain, not the main event.
Day 6: A lake cruise toward Rütli Meadow, and departure
Take an SGV boat, aboard one of the fleet’s historic Belle Époque paddle steamers if the schedule allows, toward the Rütli Meadow, the site traditionally said to mark the 1291 founding oath of the Swiss Confederation, accessible only by boat or on foot. Treat it with a touch of reverence, it’s a patriotic pilgrimage site for many Swiss, not an ordinary stop.
