5 Days in Nairobi: First-Timer Plan

Before you land. Nairobi has real street crime, mugging, phone-snatching, and smash-and-grab theft at traffic lights, so use Uber, Bolt, or Little rather than walking, especially after dark, keep car doors locked and valuables out of sight in traffic, and stick to Westlands, Karen, Gigiri, Kilimani, or Lavington as your base. That sits alongside millions of trouble-free visits a year, this is ordinary big-city caution. Check your government’s current advisory before you go.
Five days is the minimum for a genuinely worthwhile Maasai Mara extension on top of the standard two city days, this plan leans hard into that structure rather than padding out a fictional week of Nairobi-only sightseeing.
Day 1
Land at JKIA and transfer to your hotel in Westlands or Karen, budget 25-45 minutes and roughly KES 2,000-3,000 ($15-23, verify). Head to Nairobi National Park for an afternoon game drive, lions, black rhino, giraffe, zebra, and buffalo are resident, elephants are not, non-resident entry runs around $80/adult (2026, verify) plus a vehicle fee. Dinner at the Carnivore, roughly KES 3,500 ($27) per person. Tip to end the day: book your Sheldrick slot for tomorrow morning before you sleep.
Day 2
Arrive at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s elephant nursery by 10:45am for its single daily public window, 11am-noon, entry around $20/person. Then the Giraffe Centre in Karen, roughly KES 1,500, don’t confuse it with the separate, overnight-guests-only Giraffe Manor hotel next door. Round out the afternoon at the Karen Blixen Museum. Tip to end the day: pack a smaller bag tonight, tomorrow’s flight to the Mara has tighter luggage limits than a standard commercial flight.
Day 3
Fly from Wilson Airport to the Maasai Mara, roughly 45 minutes, one of Africa’s busiest light-aircraft safari routes, one-way fares run roughly $150-250 per person (verify current pricing). Check in at a tented camp or lodge (a generic booking through your tour operator, rates commonly run $200-400 per person per night all-inclusive, verify), then an afternoon game drive, non-resident conservancy or reserve fees run roughly $80-100/day. Tip to end the day: keep camp lights low after dark and follow your camp’s guidance on walking between tents at night, wildlife moves through camps more than first-timers expect.
Day 4
A full day of game drives in the Mara, morning and afternoon sessions with a midday break during the heat. If you’re visiting late July through September, ask your guide about the Mara River crossings, the Great Migration’s most dramatic moment, timing is never guaranteed but the odds are best in this window. Tip to end the day: bring a dust-proof cover for cameras and phones, Mara roads are unpaved and genuinely dusty in the dry season.
Day 5
A final early-morning game drive, then fly back to Wilson Airport and transfer to JKIA for your departure flight, budget real time for the cross-town transfer given Nairobi traffic. Tip to end the day: reconfirm your international departure flight before you leave camp, Wilson-to-JKIA connections are traffic-dependent and tighter than they look on a map.
