3 Days in Oman: Road Trip Plan

Travel advisory: Oman is currently affected by the wider 2026 regional conflict involving Iran. The US State Department has Oman at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel,” and Iran has struck sites inside the country, including the ports of Salalah and Duqm and the Musandam coast, two regions a wider Oman road trip can reach, plus shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Muscat itself has not been hit and is operating normally, but this is a live, changing situation. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking anything. Everything below is written for when it’s safe to travel again, not a push to go now.

Three days is still Muscat plus one region, but with enough time to give Nizwa’s interior a proper look instead of rushing it. Drop to the 2-day plan if that’s a stretch, or see the 4-day version to add a mountain and a desert night. This is a rental-car trip throughout, Oman has no useful intercity rail. Book these before you go

Day 1: Muscat to Nizwa

Morning

A quick pass through Muscat, the Grand Mosque if its 8-11am window fits, before picking up your rental car.

Afternoon

Drive about 1.5-2 hours to Nizwa. A 2WD car is fine, no 4x4 needed for this route.

Evening

Check in and a first look at the Nizwa Souq. Overnight in Nizwa.

Day 2: Nizwa Fort, Bahla Fort, and Jabrin Castle

Morning

Nizwa Fort, the big round tower fort at the center of town. If your visit lands on a Friday, the livestock auction at the Friday goat market peaks 07:30-09:30, an early start is worth it if you want to catch it.

Afternoon

Bahla Fort, Oman’s only UNESCO-listed fort, then Jabrin Castle, known for its painted ceilings.

Evening

Return to Nizwa for a second night.

Day 3: Al Hamra and Misfat, Then Back to Muscat

Morning

Al Hamra and the old mud-brick falaj village of Misfat al Abriyeen, both a short drive from Nizwa.

Afternoon

Drive back to Muscat, about 1.5-2 hours.

Evening

Arrive in Muscat for your final night or onward flight.

One concrete tip: if day 2 happens to fall on a Friday, decide the night before whether the goat market is worth a 04:30 alarm, it’s a real early-morning livestock auction, not a staged tourist show, and it’s genuinely over by mid-morning.
