5 Days in Pisa: The First-Timer Itinerary

Five days takes the 4-day plan , Piazza dei Miracoli, central Pisa, Lucca, and a full day in Florence, and adds Livorno as a fifth-day half-day trip: cacciucco (fish stew) and the Venezia Nuova canals, just 12-15 minutes from Pisa Centrale. The 6-day version adds Cinque Terre next.

Book these before you go

Day 1: Piazza dei Miracoli and Central Pisa

Morning

Book a timed 30-minute Tower slot in advance, about €20 with the Cathedral or €27 for every monument (both prices move, check opapisa.it first), then climb the roughly 250-300 spiral steps. Minimum age is 8, no bags allowed inside. Full ticket rules are in our Pisa tickets and hours guide .

Afternoon

See Giovanni Pisano’s carved pulpit inside the Cathedral (free, but still needs your timed pass), then the Baptistery and the Camposanto, whose frescoes were largely destroyed in an Allied air raid on 27 July 1944. Walk to Piazza dei Cavalieri for Vasari’s Palazzo della Carovana, now the Scuola Normale Superiore.

Evening

Order cecina, the local baked chickpea flatbread, then walk the Lungarni along the Arno. Watch for the tower-side “free” friendship-bracelet scam near Piazza dei Miracoli: a firm “no grazie” with hands at your sides shuts it down before they ask for €10-50.

Day 2: The Rest of Pisa, Then the Coast

Morning

Finish central Pisa: Borgo Stretto’s arcades, tiny Santa Maria della Spina, and Keith Haring’s 180-square-meter Tuttomondo mural, painted June 1989 and one of his last public works. Palazzo Blu is the indoor pivot if the weather turns.

Afternoon

Head to the coast for a half-day at Marina di Pisa (CPT bus 10, roughly 20-30 minutes), or swap in San Rossore park for free coastal-pine nature inside a UNESCO Biosphere reserve.

Evening

Order bordatino alla pisana, a rustic cornmeal-and-bean soup, paired with a glass of Bianco Pisano di San Torpè DOC if it’s on the menu.

Day 3: Lucca

Morning

Train from Pisa Centrale to Lucca, 25-31 minutes. Rent a bike at the station and cycle the top of the intact 16th-century city walls.

Afternoon

Walk the oval Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, built over a Roman amphitheater, then wander the quieter historic-center streets before catching a late-afternoon train back.

Evening

A relaxed dinner near Pisa Centrale, since day 4 starts early to make the most of Florence.

Day 4: Florence

Morning

Train from Pisa Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella, 50-80 minutes depending on the service. Florence genuinely warrants its own multi-day trip, so treat today as a highlights pass: the Duomo and its dome, then the Piazza della Signoria.

Afternoon

The Uffizi Gallery or the Ponte Vecchio, depending on how the morning ran long; book Uffizi tickets ahead if you want a guaranteed slot, since same-day queues run long in peak season.

Evening

Catch a train back to Pisa in the early evening, before connections thin out for the night.

Day 5: Livorno

Morning

Train from Pisa Centrale to Livorno, just 12-15 minutes, the shortest trip on this whole itinerary. Walk the Venezia Nuova quarter, a genuine 17th-century canal district that’s a real contrast to Pisa’s inland streets.

Afternoon

Order cacciucco, Livorno’s signature fish stew, for lunch, then wander the waterfront before your train back.

Evening

Back in Pisa for a final relaxed dinner, since this is the last night before departure for most five-day trips.

Getting around and one tip to end on

Pisa’s own sights are entirely walkable, and Lucca, Florence, and Livorno all run on straightforward train connections from Pisa Centrale, no car needed for this five-day plan.
