Pisa: Tickets, Hours and How to Visit

Pisa is one building’s worth of fame with a real Tuscan city attached to it. The Leaning Tower and the rest of Piazza dei Miracoli take a half-day to see properly; central Pisa, the Cavalieri square, Borgo Stretto, the Lungarni, adds roughly another 1 to 1.5 days on top. Past that, Pisa stops being about Pisa itself and starts being a base for Tuscany and the coast, with Lucca, Livorno, Florence, and Cinque Terre all reachable by train from Pisa Centrale.

How to visit the Leaning Tower
Book your slot online before you travel, not on arrival: entry is a timed 30-minute window, and the climb itself takes about 30 minutes up roughly 250-300 spiral steps (OPA’s own site says 251; other sources say 294 or 296). The lean sits at about 4 degrees, down from roughly 5.5 degrees before a stabilization project finished in 2001, and it’s been called stable ever since, so don’t expect any “about to fall” drama, just a genuinely tilted climb. Minimum age to climb is 8, tied to the calendar year with no exceptions, and no bags are allowed inside the tower itself; the free cloakroom only takes bags up to 20x30x38cm, so plan ahead. What about the Cathedral, Baptistery, and Camposanto?
The Cathedral (Duomo) is free to enter, but it still needs a timed pass, either bundled into any paid monument ticket or picked up same-day at the walk-up counter (which can run out). Inside, look for Giovanni Pisano’s carved marble pulpit from 1310; skip the “Galileo’s lamp” story, it’s a popular legend, not a documented fact. The Baptistery and the Camposanto round out the piazza; the Camposanto’s frescoes were largely destroyed in an Allied air raid on 27 July 1944, and the surviving preparatory sketches, the sinopie, are now shown in the Museo delle Sinopie nearby.
How much of central Pisa is actually worth seeing?
Enough to fill a relaxed day: Piazza dei Cavalieri for Vasari’s Palazzo della Carovana (now the Scuola Normale Superiore), Borgo Stretto’s arcaded shops, the Lungarni riverside walk, tiny Santa Maria della Spina on the riverbank, and Keith Haring’s 180-square-meter Tuttomondo mural from June 1989. Add the Orto Botanico, founded in 1544 as the first university botanical garden in Europe, and Palazzo Blu as an indoor option if the weather turns. None of it needs more than a day, which is the honest ceiling on “more Pisa.”
Getting there and around
Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei, PSA) sits unusually close to the center, about 1.5-2km, walkable in 16-20 minutes, with the PisaMover people-mover covering the same ground in about 5 minutes for roughly €6-6.50 to Pisa Centrale. Don’t drive into the center: Piazza dei Miracoli sits inside a ZTL (limited traffic zone), and the ANPR cameras fine rental plates too, €83-160, mailed weeks later. Park outside the ring (roughly €3-22/day) and walk in instead.
