Day 1: Sentrum and the Free Waterfront

Morning (9:00am-12:00pm)

  • Land at Oslo Gardermoen (OSL) and take Flytoget (19-20 minutes, NOK 240-270) or the cheaper Vy train (23-30 minutes, around NOK 124) into Oslo S
  • Walk straight to the Opera House , the white marble roof is free to climb any time
  • Cross to Akershus Fortress, the free medieval grounds sit a short walk along the harbor

Lunch (12:00pm-1:30pm)

  • Fiskeriet for fresh seafood near the water

Afternoon (1:30pm-5:00pm)

  • Walk the Barcode district and step into Deichman Bjørvika, the free public library
  • Wander Karl Johans gate toward the Royal Palace grounds

Evening (6:00pm-9:00pm)

  • Dinner at Lysverket or Smalhans, then a walk along Aker Brygge

Day 2: Vigeland Park and the First Scream

Morning (9:00am-12:00pm)

  • Vigeland Sculpture Park inside Frogner Park, free, open 24 hours, over 200 Gustav Vigeland bronzes, Oslo’s single best free sight

Afternoon (1:30pm-5:00pm)

  • The Munch Museum in Bjørvika, NOK 280 daytime or NOK 200 after 6pm, home to the 1910 tempera Scream

Evening (6:00pm-10:00pm)

  • Dinner in Grunerlokka, then the Mathallen food hall for a last round

Day 3: Bygdoy’s Museum Peninsula

Morning (9:00am-12:00pm)

  • Bus 30 or the seasonal ferry from City Hall out to Bygdoy
  • The Fram Museum and neighboring Kon-Tiki Museum, a combined ticket runs around NOK 250

Afternoon (1:30pm-5:00pm)

  • The Norwegian Folk Museum, roughly NOK 180-220
  • Remember the Viking Ship Museum is closed since 2021 for a rebuild targeted around 2027, the Oseberg and Gokstad ships are not on display this year

  • Tjuvholmen for the Astrup Fearnley Museum’s sculpture park and a waterfront dinner

Day 4: The Second Scream, the Palace, and Holmenkollen

Morning (9:00am-12:00pm)

  • The National Museum , around NOK 200, home to the famous 1893 painted Scream, a genuinely different painting from the one you saw on day two, not a duplicate
  • Walk the exterior of the Royal Palace and its free park, catch the roughly 1:30pm Changing of the Guard if the timing lines up

Lunch (12:00pm-1:30pm)

  • A quick bite along Karl Johans gate before heading uphill

Afternoon (1:30pm-5:00pm)

  • Take the T-bane out to Holmenkollen, the ski jump silhouette above the city, museum and jump-tower admission runs roughly NOK 160-190
  • Add Frognerseteren for a panoramic view back over the fjord if the light is good

Evening (6:00pm-9:00pm)

  • Farewell dinner back in Sentrum, or one more round in Grunerlokka if you have not had enough

Should I do the Munch Museum or the National Museum? With four days, do both, that is the whole point of the extra day. The Munch Museum’s 1910 tempera Scream and the National Museum’s 1893 painted Scream are genuinely separate works, and seeing both is the only way to actually understand why Oslo has two.

Is Holmenkollen worth a half day? Yes, if you like views or ski history. The ski jump silhouette is visible across the city, and the museum plus jump-tower ticket runs roughly NOK 160-190. Pair it with Frognerseteren’s overlook for the best single afternoon combination outside the museum circuit.
