4 Days in Bergen: The First-Timer Itinerary
Four days lets you do the city, one full fjord day, then a genuinely lighter fourth day rather than packing the trip wall to wall. Days one through three are the same Bryggen-then-Nutshell route as the 3-day itinerary , day four adds Ulriken’s cable car and Troldhaugen. Need even more? See 5 , 6 , or 7 days .

|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Bryggen, Fisketorget, Floibanen to Floyen | in town |
| Day 2 | Hanseatic Museum, Bergenhus Fortress, Nordnes | in town |
| Day 3 | Norway in a Nutshell fjord day trip | about 12h round trip |
| Day 4 | Ulriken cable car, Troldhaugen, the aquarium | short bus from center |
Day 1: Bryggen, The Fish Market And The View From Floyen
- Land at Flesland (BGO), Bybanen light rail into the center in about 45 minutes, NOK 51 adult, buy from the platform machine or the Skyss app before boarding
- Walk Bryggen, the UNESCO wharf, roughly 62 wooden buildings on the site of the 1350 Hanseatic Kontor, free to wander
- Browse Fisketorget for a snack, not your one seafood meal, stall prices run above what a proper restaurant charges
- Ride the Floibanen funicular up Mount Floyen, return fare NOK 200 online or 220 at the counter in summer, NOK 145 in winter, full pricing here
Day 2: History, The Fortress And Nordnes
- Morning at the Hanseatic Museum and Schotstuene (NOK 160 adult, guided tour included)
- Bergenhus Fortress, free grounds, Rosenkrantz Tower or Hakon’s Hall as a paid add-on
- Afternoon on the Nordnes peninsula, timber houses and a quieter pace than Bryggen
Day 3: Norway In A Nutshell
- Bergen Railway to Voss, bus through Naeroydalen via the Stalheimskleiva hairpin descent to Gudvangen, an electric cruise on the UNESCO-listed Naeroyfjord, then the Flam Railway back to Myrdal and the Bergen Railway home
- NOK 2,698 adult round trip, per visitBergen , roughly 12 hours, self-guided, no onboard commentary
- Naeroyfjord shares its UNESCO listing with Geirangerfjord but is a different, much closer fjord, Geirangerfjord sits far north near Alesund and isn’t a Bergen day trip
Day 4: Ulriken, Troldhaugen And The Aquarium
- Morning on the Ulriken643 cable car, round trip NOK 435 adult, Bergen’s highest of the “seven mountains” at 643m, with better hiking and thinner crowds than Floyen. Reaching the lower station needs the Ulriken Express shuttle, roughly NOK 75 one-way or 150 return, since it sits outside the walkable center
- Should I do Floyen or Ulriken if I only pick one? Ulriken if the budget stretches, higher, quieter, and paired with real hiking trails. Floyen wins on convenience and price if you’re tight on either
- Afternoon at Troldhaugen, Edvard Grieg’s home, important 2026 note: the villa itself is closed for renovation, confirmed by Kode , only the garden, museum building and cafe are open, roughly May 2 to September 13, with concerts from June
- Evening at the Bergen Aquarium (Akvariet) on the Nordnes peninsula, roughly NOK 415 adult in peak summer or NOK 355 for the 4-6pm afternoon rate, a solid lower-key close to a recovery day
Where To Stay
Bryggen and the Vagen harbor for walkability, Nordnes if you want to be closer to the aquarium and a quieter base. Compare current rates on Booking.com .
How much does 4 days in Bergen cost? Budget NOK 1,200-3,000 a day for the city portion, NOK 2,698 for the Nutshell day, and NOK 435 plus Troldhaugen and aquarium admission for day four, call it NOK 1,000-1,200 extra on top of a normal day.
Tips
- Treat day four as a genuine rest day, don’t stack it with another full-day tour, two big fjord days back to back wears people out
- Book the Ulriken643 cable car online, it avoids the queue at the base station in peak season
- Considering a second fjord day instead of the lighter day four? The 5-day itinerary swaps in Hardangerfjord
Confirm the Ulriken Express shuttle schedule the night before, it’s the one piece of day four that isn’t inside the walkable center.
