5 Days in Bergen: The First-Timer Itinerary

Five days is enough to do two genuinely different fjords without a rest day in between feeling stingy. Days one through four repeat the 4-day itinerary : the city, Norway in a Nutshell, then Ulriken and Troldhaugen. Day 1: Bryggen, The Fish Market And The View From Floyen

  • Land at Flesland (BGO), Bybanen light rail into the center, about 45 minutes, NOK 51 adult
  • Walk Bryggen, the UNESCO wharf, roughly 62 wooden buildings from the 1350 Hanseatic Kontor, free to wander
  • Browse Fisketorget for a snack, not a full meal, stall prices run above a proper restaurant’s

Day 2: History, The Fortress And Nordnes

Day 5: Hardangerfjord

  • A full day out on the Hardangerfjord, greener and gentler than Naeroyfjord’s narrow walls, roughly 2-3 hours each way by road
  • Stop at Steinsdalsfossen, an easy roadside waterfall, and if the tour reaches it, Vøringsfossen, one of Norway’s biggest and more remote falls
  • In season, fruit orchards line the route, this is Norway’s fruit-growing region as much as its fjord country
  • An optional RIB speedboat add-on from Norheimsund runs roughly NOK 990-1,190 for 60-90 minutes on the water, a faster, wetter way to see the fjord up close
  • Is Hardangerfjord worth doing after Norway in a Nutshell? Yes, they’re genuinely different products, not a repeat. Naeroyfjord is narrow and dramatic, Hardangerfjord is broader with waterfalls and orchards, do both if you have the days rather than treating one as a substitute for the other

Tips

  • Space the two fjord days apart, day three and day five either side of the lighter day four, back-to-back full fjord days will wear anyone out
  • Book both fjord tours 2-4 weeks ahead for summer dates, both sell out
