Day 1: Kings Park and the CBD Waterfront

  • Ride the free CAT bus or walk down into the CBD
  • Spend the afternoon at Elizabeth Quay, a free 730-metre waterfront promenade with the pedestrian Elizabeth Quay Bridge. Day 2: The Perth Cultural Centre and Northbridge

  • Evening on the William St/James St nightlife strip, genuinely good food and bars, just stick to main streets and travel in groups once the bars empty out late

Day 3: Cottesloe Beach and the Fremantle Doctor

  • Train or bus out to Cottesloe Beach, Perth’s calmer, family-oriented swimming beach, Norfolk pines lining the foreshore lawns and the Indiana Tea House as the local landmark. Swim between the flags, rips exist even on a postcard-calm day
  • Lunch near the foreshore
  • Feel the Fremantle Doctor roll in, the reliable afternoon sea breeze that arrives roughly 10am-3pm and is strongest in December and January, without it summer afternoons routinely top 40C
  • Watch the sunset from the beach, then CAT or train back into the city

Day 4: Optus Stadium and Perth Zoo

  • Take the Transperth ferry from Elizabeth Quay across to South Perth, on the same Go Anywhere Fare as the buses and trains, a cheap, scenic alternative to a paid river cruise
  • Spend the morning at Perth Zoo, adult admission runs roughly A$33-39, sources disagree, confirm the current rate at perthzoo.wa.gov.au before you go. Skip it if Rottnest Island is already on your trip, free-roaming quokkas plus Kings Park’s native flora cover similar ground for less money
  • Ferry back and walk or CAT to Optus Stadium in Burswood, 61,266 seats, Australia’s third-largest stadium and home to the West Coast Eagles, Fremantle Dockers, and Perth Scorchers. Day 5: Scarborough Beach and the Swan River Foreshore

  • Head to Scarborough Beach, about 12km northwest, a surf-and-kitesurf beach with a redeveloped foreshore of bars and restaurants, livelier and younger-skewing than Cottesloe
  • Lunch at the foreshore strip
  • Back toward the city, walk or bike the Swan River foreshore path, or book a sunset Swan River cruise departing Barrack Street Jetty instead of walking it
  • River-view dinner back in the CBD

Is 5 days enough for Perth? Enough for both beaches and the river. Five days covers Kings Park, the Cultural Centre, Cottesloe, Scarborough, the Zoo, Optus Stadium and the Swan River foreshore, with only the inner suburbs left for a 6-day trip.

How much does 5 days in Perth cost? Budget roughly A$200-300 a day (~US$140-210) for a mid-range trip: a CBD or Northbridge hotel, one paid attraction, and a proper dinner. That is before Rottnest ferries or a Swan Valley tour, both belong to the separate Perth Australia leg.

Things to Know

  • Seasons run flipped from the northern hemisphere: December-February is hot, dry summer (30-40C), June-August is cool, wet winter (highs around 18C). September-November and March-May are the mild, dry sweet spots
  • Tipping is not expected anywhere in Australia, rounding up is a nice gesture, never an obligation
  • Drop bears are a myth, a decades-old joke Australians tell tourists, not a genuine wildlife warning

Transportation

  • Since 1 January 2026, Transperth runs one flat Go Anywhere Fare: A$3.50 cash or contactless (~US$2.45), A$2.80 with an Autoload SmartRider (~US$1.95), covering any trip up to 3 hours anywhere on the network. Check current fares at transperth.wa.gov.au
  • The four free CAT bus loops (Red, Blue, Yellow, Green) circle the CBD and Northbridge every 5-15 minutes, no card needed, and the Free Transit Zone covers trains between City West and Claisebrook stations for nothing
  • The Airport Line runs roughly 18 minutes between the CBD and either of Perth Airport’s two terminal precincts

Tips

  • Book the WA Museum, an Optus Stadium tour slot, or a Swan River cruise a day or two ahead in peak season (Dec-Feb, and school holidays)
  • Pack sun protection regardless of season, the WA sun is strong even on a mild autumn or spring day
