Day 1: Fremantle, the UNESCO Prison and the Cappuccino Strip

Day 2: Rottnest Island and the Quokkas

Day 3: The Swan Valley Wine Trail

Day 4: The Pinnacles Desert

  • Walk among thousands of limestone pillars rising from yellow desert sand, best at sunset if your tour runs a late departure

  • The furthest genuine day trip in this itinerary, still comfortably doable in a day, unlike what’s coming on day six

Day 5: Penguin Island and Rockingham

  • Add a dolphin or sea lion cruise if you want more than the penguin colony

Is 6 days enough for Perth’s best day trips?

Enough for all five single-day trips plus a taste of Margaret River, not enough to finish it. Fremantle, Rottnest, the Swan Valley, the Pinnacles and Penguin Island fill days one through five cleanly, day six opens Margaret River but the caves, the surf coast and the drive home spill into a seventh day you haven’t budgeted for.

How much do these Perth day trips cost?

Things to Know

  • Seasons run flipped from the northern hemisphere: Sep-Nov and Mar-May are the mild, dry sweet spots for the drive south, Dec-Feb runs hot (30-40C)
  • Tipping is not expected anywhere in Australia, rounding up is a nice gesture, never an obligation
  • Most visitors need an ETA or eVisitor visa arranged before departure, not on arrival

Transportation

  • The Fremantle Line runs a direct 30-minute train on the standard Transperth Go Anywhere Fare, A$3.50 cash or contactless (~US$2.45)
  • Rottnest Island is largely car-free, bike hire or the small settlement bus cover getting around once you land
  • Margaret River needs a car or an overnight tour package, public transport does not cover this distance comfortably

  • Seriously consider finding a seventh day before you book this one, Margaret River’s caves and surf coast are the reason to go and day six alone doesn’t reach them
