7 Days in Rotterdam: The Full Itinerary

A full week from Rotterdam covers the city’s own rebuilt-modern core, four of the Netherlands’ best-connected day trips, and still leaves room for Amsterdam as the longer finale. Days one and two stay in Rotterdam itself, days three through six cover Kinderdijk, Delft, The Hague and Dordrecht, and day seven is the one trip worth the extra travel time. Drop to the 6-day plan if Amsterdam doesn’t fit your trip.

Book these before you go

Day 1: Modern architecture core

Morning

Start at the Erasmusbrug, then walk to the Markthal, MVRDV’s 2014 market hall, free to enter, for the giant “Horn of Plenty” ceiling mural and a market-stall lunch.

Afternoon

Visit the Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen), Piet Blom’s tilted 1984 houses, the Kijk-Kubus show cube costs a few euros. Then the Euromast (around €15-18), the 1960 tower reaching 185 metres, for the city’s clearest overview.

Evening

Dinner and drinks on Witte de Withstraat, Rotterdam’s liveliest bar-and-restaurant strip.

Tip: buy a day pass for RET metro/tram/bus (around €9) on arrival rather than tapping separately for every ride.

Day 2: Delfshaven, the Kop van Zuid, and the port

Morning

Walk Delfshaven, the district that escaped the 1940 bombing, and visit the Pelgrimskerk, where the Pilgrim Fathers worshipped before departing in 1620. Order kapsalon, invented here in 2003, for lunch.

Afternoon

Cross to the Kop van Zuid, home to De Rotterdam, the historic Hotel New York, and the retired ocean liner SS Rotterdam. Fit in the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen (around €20) if you have the energy, remembering the historic main museum stays closed until roughly 2030.

Evening

Take a Spido harbor cruise (around €18-20) over Europe’s largest port, then dinner at the Fenix Food Factory on Katendrecht.

Tip: check the Spido cruise’s last departure before planning dinner, the schedule shifts seasonally.

Day 3: Kinderdijk

Morning

Take the Waterbus to Kinderdijk, roughly 30 minutes each way. The 19 windmills, built around 1740 and UNESCO-listed since 1997, are the largest concentration of historic windmills in the country. Walk the flat polder path; entering one of the two show windmills costs a separate small ticket.

Afternoon

Return to Rotterdam by mid-afternoon for the Maritime Museum, or a slower pass through the Markthal.

Evening

Dinner back in the centre.

Tip: take the earliest Waterbus sailing you can manage, afternoon crossings get busier in peak season.

Day 4: Delft

Morning

Trains from Rotterdam to Delft run as often as every five minutes. Delft is Vermeer’s birthplace, buried in the Oude Kerk alongside scientist Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. Visit Royal Delft (De Porceleyne Fles), the historic pottery factory still producing the city’s blue-and-white Delftware.

Afternoon

Walk Delft’s canals and the Markt square, and visit the Nieuwe Kerk, which holds the Dutch royal family’s burial vault.

Evening

Dinner back in Rotterdam, or in Delft itself before the last train back.

Tip: buy Royal Delft tickets online if you’re visiting on a weekend, factory tour slots can fill up in peak season.

Day 5: The Hague

Morning

Take the train to The Hague (Den Haag), about 25-30 minutes. Visit the Mauritshuis, home to Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” and the Binnenhof, the historic seat of the Dutch parliament.

Afternoon

Head to Scheveningen, the North Sea beach district that draws around 10 million visitors a year, or Madurodam, the miniature-Netherlands park, if you’re travelling with kids.

Evening

Return to Rotterdam for dinner in the centre.

Tip: book the Mauritshuis’s timed entry online before you go, walk-up queues for the Vermeer room build fast on weekends.

Day 6: Dordrecht, then a slower Rotterdam afternoon

Morning

Take the train to Dordrecht, about 15-20 minutes, the oldest city in the present province of South Holland, granted city rights in 1220. It sits where the Meuse, Merwede and Rhine rivers meet, marked by the Groothoofdspoort gate.

Afternoon

Return to Rotterdam by early afternoon and spend the rest of the day at Kralingse Bos and Kralingse Plas, the lakeside forest east of the centre, a genuine slow-paced break before the longer day trip ahead.

Evening

An early dinner and an early night, tomorrow is the longest day of the trip.

Tip: keep Dordrecht to a half day so you land back in Rotterdam with genuine downtime before Amsterdam.

Day 7: Amsterdam

Morning

Take the direct intercity train to Amsterdam, commonly cited at roughly 40 minutes to just over an hour, the longest single connection of the week. Start with the canal ring or a major museum depending on your own priorities, this is Rotterdam’s guide, so treat Amsterdam as the one full day it deserves rather than trying to fit Rotterdam sightseeing around it.

Afternoon

Continue exploring Amsterdam at whatever pace the morning set, canal-side neighbourhoods reward slow walking more than a checklist of stops.

Evening

Take the direct intercity train back to Rotterdam for a final night in the city that’s been your base all week.

Tip: buy your Amsterdam return ticket in the morning rather than waiting until evening, direct services run frequently but a pre-bought ticket saves you a queue at Amsterdam Centraal on the way back.

Getting around and where to stay

The city centre around Coolsingel and the Lijnbaan is the easiest base for a trip this length. Transit runs on OVpay, tap in and out at every ride, forgetting to check out charges the maximum fare.

One concrete tip: keep Amsterdam as the last day, not an early one. By day seven you’ll already know Rotterdam well enough to judge the contrast, and a longer day trip lands better once the week’s pace is already set.
