3 Days: San Francisco and NorCal

Three days from a San Francisco base adds Napa wine country to the two closest trips: Muir Woods and Sausalito (30 minutes), Point Reyes (1 to 1.5 hours), then a full day of tastings an hour east. Same spine as the 2-day plan , one more full day added. Do the city itself first though, our 3-day San Francisco itinerary covers that ground properly.

Day 1: Muir Woods and Sausalito

Morning

Cross the Golden Gate Bridge and stop briefly at a vista point like Battery Spencer, then move on, overlook parking here is a known target for car break-ins, so leave nothing visible. Muir Woods sits about 30 minutes from downtown, and the reservation system is strict: parking OR a shuttle seat, never both, booked year-round at gomuirwoods.com , roughly $10 for parking or $4 round trip for the shuttle. No cell signal on site, so screenshot your confirmation first.

Afternoon

Lunch in Sausalito, a small harbor town with houseboats and bay views, none of the Wharf’s chaos.

Evening

Ride the Golden Gate Ferry back to the Ferry Building, about $14 one-way, and grab dinner at one of the market stalls there.

Day 2: Point Reyes

Morning

Drive further north into Point Reyes National Seashore, 1 to 1.5 hours out depending which part of the seashore you’re aiming for. This is a genuine full day, budget for it. Cell service drops off past Point Reyes Station, and the old winter Lighthouse shuttle has been suspended indefinitely, so verify current road access to the Lighthouse and Chimney Rock on the official park site before you drive out.

Afternoon

Stop in Point Reyes Station for lunch, then Tomales Bay for oysters straight from the source, some of the best in California. Watch the headlands for tule elk and, in winter, elephant seals. Parking lots close by 4pm regardless of season.

Evening

Drive back into the city for a quieter night, the wine country day is next.

Is One Day Enough for Both Muir Woods and Point Reyes?

Not on the same day. Muir Woods and Sausalito already fill a half-day-plus-half-day, and Point Reyes runs a genuine full day once the drive both ways is counted. Splitting them, as this itinerary does, gets real time at both instead of a rushed pass through either.

Day 3: Napa Valley

Morning

Drive east to Napa, roughly an hour to ninety minutes with no BART or train option out here, it’s car, tour, or car service only. Designate a driver before the first pour.

Afternoon

Budget $40-75+ per tasting at name-brand wineries; a handful of walk-in bar flights run cheaper, and some houses waive the fee with a bottle purchase. Friday afternoons back into the city on Highway 37 or 121 get genuinely ugly, so plan around it if you can.

Evening

Dinner in downtown Napa before the drive back, or stay the night out there if a full day of tasting has everyone done with driving.

Can You Fit Sonoma Into the Same Day as Napa?

Technically, but it stretches the day thin. Napa and Sonoma both sit 1 to 1.5 hours from the city in slightly different directions, and driving between them on top of that eats into actual tasting time. Pick one per day if wine is the real point of the visit, not a box to check.

Where to Stay

Union Square or the Financial District works for all three nights, central enough to leave the car in a garage on Day 2 and 3 without losing convenience.

Getting Around

None of the three days touch Muni or BART, every one of them depends on the rental car. Book it before you land rather than at the airport counter.

Bring cash or a card that a small Sonoma or Napa tasting room will actually take, a few of the smaller houses still don’t run cards for the flight itself.
