Four days from a San Francisco base strings together the closest four Northern California trips: Muir Woods and Sausalito, Point Reyes, Napa, and a run down the coast to Half Moon Bay. Day 1: Muir Woods and Sausalito

Morning

Cross the bridge into Marin, pausing briefly at Battery Spencer for the overlook shot, this parking area is a known car break-in target, so leave nothing visible. Muir Woods is about 30 minutes out, and both parking and shuttle access run on a strict reservation system, one or the other, never both, booked year-round at gomuirwoods.com , around $10 to park or $4 round trip on the shuttle. Afternoon

Lunch in Sausalito, a small harbor town, houseboats and bay views.

Evening

Golden Gate Ferry back to the Ferry Building, about $14 one-way, dinner at one of the market stalls.

Day 2: Point Reyes

Morning

Drive further north into Point Reyes National Seashore, 1 to 1.5 hours out, a genuine full day. Cell service turns spotty past Point Reyes Station, and the old winter Lighthouse shuttle has been suspended indefinitely, verify current road access on the official park site before committing the drive.

Afternoon

Point Reyes Station for lunch, then Tomales Bay oysters straight from the source. Watch for tule elk on the headlands, and elephant seals if you’re there in winter. Parking lots close by 4pm.

Evening

Back into the city for a quieter night.

Day 3: Napa Valley

Morning

Drive out to Napa, roughly an hour to ninety minutes east, no BART or train line reaches out here, it’s car, tour, or car service only. Designate a driver before the first pour.

Afternoon

Budget $40-75+ per tasting at name-brand wineries, cheaper walk-in bar flights exist, and some houses waive the fee with a bottle purchase. Watch for Friday-afternoon traffic on Highway 37 or 121 heading back.

Evening

Dinner in downtown Napa before the drive back, or an overnight there if the tastings ran long.

Is Renting a Car Actually Worth It for This Trip?

Yes, for every day except a walkable stretch inside the city itself. Muir Woods, Point Reyes, Napa, and Half Moon Bay all sit outside Muni and BART range, and a rideshare round trip to any of them costs more over four days than a rental. Compare rental cars in San Francisco before you land.

Day 4: Half Moon Bay and Pescadero

Morning

Highway 1 south through Devil’s Slide’s dramatic cliffside trail, then Half Moon Bay, about 45 minutes out. Home to the Mavericks big-wave break, best viewed from the cliffs roughly November through March, and an October pumpkin festival that jams the tiny downtown for a weekend.

Afternoon

Push on to Pescadero for tide pools at Bean Hollow State Beach and a slice of olallieberry pie at Duarte’s Tavern, a genuine central-coast institution since 1894. If the day allows, Santa Cruz sits another 45 minutes past Pescadero, with its own boardwalk and a rougher-edged surf town feel than Monterey.

Evening

Dinner in Half Moon Bay itself, or drive back into the city for a last night before returning the car.

Should You Push On to Santa Cruz Instead of Stopping at Half Moon Bay?

Only if the coastline itself, not the drive, is the point. Santa Cruz adds close to an hour each way on top of Half Moon Bay and Pescadero, and Highway 17 over the mountains backs up badly on weekend evenings. Treat it as a swap for Half Moon Bay, not an add-on, unless you’re staying a fifth day.

Where to Stay

Union Square or the Financial District works as a single base for all four nights, central enough that garage parking on the non-driving day costs nothing in convenience.

Getting Around

All four days depend on the rental car; none of these trips touch Muni or BART. Book the car before you land, downtown garages run $50-75 a day so there’s no reason to have it before Day 1’s drive.

Fill the tank before Day 2 and Day 4 specifically, gas stations thin out fast once you’re past Point Reyes Station and again south of Half Moon Bay.
