5 Days in Slovenia: First-Timer Itinerary
Five days is the point where the Soca Valley stops being a drive-through and becomes an actual stop. Book these before you go: Soca rafting trips run EUR 64-130 depending on route length, plus a separate 2026 river permit (EUR 3-6) unless your operator bundles it in, so confirm what’s included before you pay. Rent a car 2-3 months ahead of peak summer, and Vintgar Gorge tickets need booking 48 hours out in July and August.
Day 1: Ljubljana
Land at Jože Pučnik Airport (26km from the city, bus EUR 4.10-4.50, 30-50 minutes) and pick up your rental car in town rather than at the airport for a better rate. Walk the car-free old town: the Triple Bridge, Preseren Square, the Central Market colonnade, all free and UNESCO-listed. Ljubljana Castle is EUR 15 for the exhibition, EUR 19 with the funicular. Dinner by the river, then Metelkova Mesto if you’re up for it.
Day 2: Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge
Drive 45-50 minutes to Bled. Hit Vintgar Gorge first if it’s open (April-October, EUR 15, hourly timed slots, 245-person cap, current slots at vintgar.si ). The island church takes a pletna boat only (EUR 20 round trip, cash, no bridge, no swimming ashore), and Bled Castle above the lake is EUR 19. Get the kremsnita inland for about EUR 4 rather than paying EUR 7-9 lakefront for the same slice.
Day 3: Lake Bohinj
Bohinj sits 25-40 minutes past Bled, inside Triglav National Park (park info at tnp.si ), quieter and genuinely swimmable in a way Bled isn’t anymore. The Vogel cable car is EUR 28 return, with the Triglav massif laid out in front of you at 1535m. Overnight here to shorten the mountain drive tomorrow.
Day 4: The Vrsic Pass to Bovec
Roughly 112km from Bohinj via Kranjska Gora and the Vrsic Pass, Slovenia’s highest crossing at 1,611m with 50 hairpins through Triglav National Park; give it 2-3 hours of driving plus real stop time at the viewpoints. A free shuttle bus runs the pass 1 June-30 September 2026, and summit parking is banned outright this year, so check the current setup before driving it yourself in peak season. If it’s closed for winter (typically late October into May), the Bohinj car train through the tunnel is the alternative. Arrive in Bovec by afternoon and settle in; save the big activities for tomorrow.
Day 5: Soca Valley rafting and the Kobarid Museum
This is the day the Soca actually delivers. Rafting runs EUR 64-90 for a standard route (up to EUR 130 for the longest 18km stretch), plus a separate river permit (EUR 3-6, unless the operator bundles it in for 2026), so ask exactly what’s included before booking. In the afternoon, drive the short 21km/30 minutes to Kobarid and its WWI museum (EUR 8 adult), which covers the Isonzo Front’s twelve battles, including the 1917 breakthrough that gave Ernest Hemingway a chapter of “A Farewell to Arms.” Close the loop back to Ljubljana the next morning, or keep going: the 6 and 7 day plans push on to the Karst caves and Piran from here.
Is Soca Valley rafting worth booking ahead, or can you walk up?
Book ahead in peak season. Bovec’s rafting operators run daily trips through summer, but 2026 adds a separate river-permit system layered on top of the operator booking, and walk-up slots thin out fast on a sunny July afternoon. Confirm whether the quoted price already includes the permit; it’s a genuinely fragmented pricing picture between operators right now.
What’s the real difference between Bled and Bohinj on a 5 day trip?
Bled is the photo: the island, the castle, the cream cake, and the tour buses that arrive with all three. Bohinj is the actual lake to swim in, 25-40 minutes further and noticeably quieter. On a 5 day trip there’s room for both, so do Bled at opening for the postcard and Bohinj in the afternoon for the actual relaxing part.
