4 Days in Stavanger: Adds Kjerag

A fourth day steps up from Preikestolen to Kjerag, a meaningfully harder hike, so this plan gives you a rest day of city sights in between.

Day 1

Begin at Stavanger Cathedral (Domkirken), completed around 1125, then spend the morning in Gamle Stavanger among its roughly 173 protected wooden houses, including the Norwegian Canning Museum inside the district. Dinner near the harbour runs roughly NOK 200-300 for something casual.

Tip: Gamle Stavanger is quietest early in the morning, front-load your visit before the day-trip buses fill the lanes.

Day 2

Drive or bus about 40 minutes through the Ryfast tunnel, toll roughly NOK 179 (verify current rate), to the Preikestolen Fjellstue trailhead. The hike runs roughly 3.8km each way, 3-4 hours round trip, to the flat granite plateau 604m above the Lysefjord. Pack your own lunch, there’s nothing to buy at the summit.

Tip: keep well back from the unfenced edge for photos, especially in wind or wet conditions.

Day 3

Use this slower day for the sights the first two skipped. The Norwegian Petroleum Museum, opened in 1999 in a building shaped like a small oil platform, covers the 1969 Ekofisk discovery (check current ticket price, verify). Walk on to Fargegaten’s painted shopfronts and out to Sverd i Fjell at Hafrsfjord, three bronze swords commemorating the 872 battle that united Norway. Budget NOK 250-350 for dinner.

Tip: treat this as a rest day for your legs before Kjerag, don’t add another long walk on top of it.

Day 4

Kjerag is a genuine step up from Preikestolen: roughly 2.5-3 hours each way from the Øygardsstølen trailhead, about a 2-hour drive from Stavanger, with chain-assisted sections and real elevation. The reward is the Kjeragbolten boulder, wedged over a 241m drop; standing on it is optional. This trail runs late June through September only and closes entirely in winter.

Tip: build in slack for the drive and the hike both, Kjerag genuinely eats a full 10-12 hour day once you count travel time.

Practical notes

Norway is near-cashless, and Vinmonopolet closes Sundays. Base yourself in the city centre for days 1 and 3, and expect an early start for both hiking days.
