City centre and Vågen harbour

The obvious first-timer base: everything, Gamle Stavanger, the cathedral, restaurants, and Fargegaten, sits within an easy walk, and the train station is central too. This is the pick if you want to minimise time spent getting anywhere, and it’s the area with the widest range of hotel chains and price points.

Staying inside the old town itself, among the roughly 173 protected white wooden houses, trades a little convenience for atmosphere. It’s still an easy walk to the harbour, and waking up among the cobbled lanes is a genuinely different experience from a standard city-centre hotel, though options here tend to be smaller guesthouses and apartments rather than large chains.

Near Sola and the airport

Basing near Sola suits an early flight or a beach-focused stop, the Jæren coast’s sandy shoreline is a short drive from here. It’s a reasonable option if you’re arriving late or leaving early and want to skip the transfer into the centre twice.

Jørpeland and the Ryfylke side

For a hiking-first trip, staying out toward Jørpeland or the wider Ryfylke fjord region puts you closer to the Preikestolen and Kjerag trailheads, avoiding a daily commute from the city. It’s a smaller, quieter base with fewer amenities, worth it mainly if the hikes are the whole point of the trip.

Given how compact Stavanger is, it’s worth comparing properties by area rather than chasing a single named recommendation, options and prices shift often enough that a name-based tip goes stale fast. Whatever you book, remember Norway is genuinely expensive, rooms, meals, and drinks all run higher here than in most of Europe, so factor that into your daily budget rather than being surprised on arrival.
