Trondheim’s event calendar is smaller than a big European capital’s, but the 3 fixtures below are genuinely worth planning a trip around, and the city’s large student population keeps a steady undercurrent of live music and bar culture running the rest of the year.

Olavsfestdagene (St. Olav Festival)

Trondheim’s major cultural and church festival is built around Olsok, St. Olav’s Day on 29 July, marking the anniversary of his death at the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. The 2026 dates run 28 July to 3 August, with roughly 300 events, concerts, medieval markets, pilgrim walks, and exhibitions, centered on Nidaros Cathedral and its courtyard. This is the single best week to be in Trondheim if the festival appeals, but it’s also the busiest and priciest week for hotel rooms, so book well ahead.

Pstereo

One of central Norway’s largest music festivals, Pstereo focuses on pop, rock, and electronica and has run annually every August since 2007. It’s held at Marinen, the green space beside the Nidelva, right next to the cathedral and Kristiansten Fortress, so it’s an easy add if you’re already in the city for the summer season.

Trondheim Jazz Festival

Running every spring since 1979, this jazz festival is a collaboration among local jazz organizations, venues, and the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. It’s a smaller, more local affair than Olavsfestdagene or Pstereo, and a good pick if you want a genuine slice of the city’s music scene without the summer crowds. Venues are scattered across Midtbyen and Bakklandet, so it’s easy to combine an evening set with a normal day of sightseeing rather than treating it as a separate trip.

The rest of the year

Outside these 3 fixed points, Trondheim’s calendar is thinner than a bigger city’s, and it’s worth being honest about that rather than inventing a packed year-round events scene. What does carry through the calendar is NTNU’s presence, more than 35,000 students give the city a livelier café, bar, and live-music feel than its medieval-capital image alone would suggest, so even outside festival season there’s usually something happening around Solsiden or Bakklandet on a weekend night.

Planning around events

Remember that most shops and Vinmonopolet close on Sundays regardless of what else is happening in town, so plan any alcohol or shopping needs around that fixed rule rather than a festival schedule.
