5 Days in Sydney: The First-Timer Itinerary
5 Days in Sydney: The First-Timer Itinerary
Five days is where Sydney stops feeling like a checklist and starts feeling like a city you actually know: the two icons, Bondi and its coastal walk, a full harbour-ferry day, then a fifth day eating your way through Newtown and Surry Hills. This builds on the 4 day itinerary ; with two more days, the 6 day plan adds a museums and markets day on top.
Book these before you go:
- Sydney Opera House guided tour , interior access is tour or show ticket only
- Taronga Zoo Express tickets , the ferry-plus-zoo bundle beats buying separately
- A hotel in Surry Hills on Booking.com , it puts your day 5 food crawl on your doorstep
| Day | Focus | Don’t miss |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Circular Quay, The Rocks, Opera House, Harbour Bridge | Book the Opera House tour first |
| 2 | Bondi Beach and the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk | Swim only between the patrol flags |
| 3 | Darling Harbour and the Royal Botanic Garden | The Garden is free every day of the year |
| 4 | Manly ferry and Taronga Zoo | Both depart from Circular Quay wharves |
| 5 | Newtown and Surry Hills food day | Skip the Darling Harbour tourist strip restaurants |
Day 1: Circular Quay, the Opera House and the Bridge
Circular Quay first, then The Rocks, then your booked Sydney Opera House tour (about $48 adult), since the interior only opens with a tour or a show ticket. Afternoon: the BridgeMuseum (about $40) or the free pedestrian walk across the bridge.
Day 2: Bondi Beach and the coastal walk
Bondi Beach, then the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk from late morning, about 6km and 2-3 hours past Tamarama, Bronte and Clovelly. Free and better than any paid coastal cruise. Swim only between the patrol flags.
Day 3: Darling Harbour and the Royal Botanic Garden
Morning at the free Royal Botanic Garden
and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair. Afternoon at Darling Harbour, picking one or two of SEA LIFE ($39), WILD LIFE Zoo ($26), Madame Tussauds ($25) or the Sydney Tower Eye ($22).
Day 4: Manly ferry and Taronga Zoo
Morning at Taronga Zoo via the Zoo Express bundle (about $67), afternoon on the classic F1 Manly ferry from Wharf 3 (about 30 minutes) and Manly’s beach. Both depart Circular Quay, just different wharves.
Day 5: Newtown and Surry Hills food day
Skip the tourist-strip restaurants around Circular Quay and Darling Harbour today. Spend the morning on King Street in Newtown, a 10 minute train from the CBD and internationally strong on Thai, Korean, Indian and vegan food, then head to Surry Hills in the afternoon, Sydney’s unofficial food capital along Crown Street, for modern Australian, Vietnamese and Italian spots with better value than anything near the harbour. Casual meals run $20-35 per person here, a proper dinner $50-80+, and tipping is never assumed since hospitality staff are paid award wages.
Where do locals actually eat in Sydney?
Newtown and Surry Hills, not the strip around Circular Quay or Darling Harbour. King Street in Newtown covers Thai, Korean, Indian and vegan food at real prices, while Crown Street in Surry Hills is Sydney’s genuine food capital for modern Australian and Vietnamese cooking. Both sit a short train ride from the CBD and consistently beat the harbourfront tourist restaurants on value.
Do you need to tip in Sydney restaurants?
No. Hospitality staff in Australia are paid award wages, so tipping is never obligatory or assumed, even at a nice sit-down dinner. Rounding up the bill or adding 5-10% for standout service is a nice gesture, but nothing extra is expected at counter service, and no one will chase you for it.
Five days gets you both icons, the best free coastal walk, a full harbour-ferry day and a genuine food day away from the tourist strip. Book the Opera House and Zoo Express slots early; the Newtown and Surry Hills day needs no reservations at all.
