4 Days in Sydney: The Day-Trip Itinerary
Four days is where this itinerary starts feeling like a genuine Australia trip rather than a single city break. It keeps the same spine as the 3-day plan, Sydney base, Blue Mountains, Royal National Park, and adds a fourth day out to Hunter Valley wine country, the one day trip on this list where a car or a tour matters more than a train timetable.
| Day | Focus | Distance / travel time from Sydney |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sydney base: harbour orientation | in the city |
| 2 | Blue Mountains day trip | about 2 hours by train each way |
| 3 | Royal National Park day trip | about 1.5 hours by train and ferry each way |
| 4 | Hunter Valley wine day trip | about 2 to 2.5 hours by car each way |
Book these before you go:
- Hunter Valley wine tasting tour from Sydney on Viator , transport and a driver both handled for you
- Blue Mountains guided day tour on GetYourGuide if trains are not your thing
- Sydney hotel rates on Booking.com , Central Station proximity matters most on day 2
Day 1: Sydney as your base
Morning
Get an Opal card or just tap a contactless card, one fare system covers trains, buses, ferries, and light rail. Walk the Opera House forecourt and the foot of the Harbour Bridge, both free.
Afternoon
Ride the Manly ferry from Circular Quay Wharf 3, 8.39 AUD each way and arguably the best harbour view available at any price. Explore Manly’s ocean beach and the calmer harbourside strip near the wharf.
Evening
Dinner in Surry Hills or Newtown beats the Circular Quay tourist strip on both price and quality. Sleep early, three consecutive day trips start tomorrow.
Day 2: Blue Mountains
Morning
NSW TrainLink’s Blue Mountains Line runs hourly from Central, about 2 hours to Katoomba, 7 to 8 AUD off-peak or up to 11 AUD peak one-way. Check the current Blue Mountains Line timetable before you leave. From Katoomba, walk to Echo Point for the Three Sisters, part of Blue Mountains National Park .
Afternoon
Scenic World’s Unlimited Discovery Pass, all four attractions, about 55 AUD adult, 30 AUD child, 45 AUD concession. Lunch in Katoomba or Leura before the return train.
Evening
Build in a buffer for the hourly return service. A low-key dinner near your hotel is the right call after a full day on your feet.
Day 3: Royal National Park
Morning
Train to Cronulla, then a roughly 30-minute ferry to Bundeena, about 1.5 hours door to door. This is the world’s second-oldest national park, and the Royal National Park visitor page has current Coast Track conditions and ferry times.
Afternoon
Walk a section of the Coast Track and swim at a patrolled beach if the flags are up. Bring lunch, food options inside the park are sparse.
Evening
Ferry and train back to the city. Keep dinner simple, a driver waits for you at 7am tomorrow.
Day 4: Hunter Valley
Morning
Hunter Valley sits about 2 to 2.5 hours from Sydney by car, or roughly 2.5 hours via the scenic Wollombi road. Public transport is a genuine slog, a suburban train plus a connecting bus runs 3 to 4.5 hours, so a booked tour or a rental car with a designated driver is the practical choice for wine tasting. Start at one of the boutique cellar doors near Pokolbin.
Afternoon
Move between two or three wineries at most, tastings add up fast and so does the drive time. A vineyard lunch is part of the appeal here, book ahead if your tour includes one.
Evening
Return drive or coach back to Sydney, roughly 2 to 2.5 hours. A final dinner back in the city, or an early night if day 4 has worn you out; four day trips in four days is a genuinely full run.
Getting around and quick notes
Sydney Airport sits about 8 kilometres south of the CBD; the airport train stations charge an added access fee on both tap-on and tap-off, budget 20 AUD-plus for that single trip, or walk 20 to 25 minutes to Mascot station to skip it. UV runs extreme even under cloud cover. Seasons run reversed from the Northern Hemisphere, June to August is winter here, not summer.
Our Sydney travel guide and the standard 4-day Sydney itinerary cover the city itself in depth. With a fifth day, the 5-day version of this itinerary adds the Grand Pacific Drive, and the Blue Mountains gateway guide has the full day 2 breakdown.
