7 Days in Trondheim: First-Timer Plan

A full week covers Trondheim’s core sights, both major day trips, and leaves 2 open days for whatever the weather and your energy allow.

Day 1

Nidaros Cathedral, entry roughly NOK 120-150, and the Archbishop’s Palace for the crown regalia. Cross Gamle Bybro into Bakklandet for the afternoon, then dinner at Fagn or Credo, roughly NOK 500-900 for a mid-range meal.

Tip: the cathedral closes during services, check ahead so you don’t arrive at the wrong time.

Day 2

Ferry to Munkholmen from Ravnkloa (roughly NOK 95, verify, seasonal), then Kristiansten Fortress and its small Donjonen museum in the afternoon.

Tip: the ferry runs only roughly May or June through August or September, keep the fortress as a backup for the off-season.

Day 3

Gråkallbanen tram up to Lian for the morning, Bymarka forest trails at the top, then Ringve or Rockheim in the afternoon, individual tickets roughly NOK 130-200. Coffee at Jacobsen & Svart or Dromedar to close the day.

Tip: pack a rain layer, Trondheim’s weather can shift within a single afternoon even in summer.

Day 4

Day trip north to Stiklestad, roughly 90km and 1.5 hours by car, for the 1030 battle site, its dioramas and short film, the 1180 church, and the 30-building folk museum.

Tip: budget the whole day for Stiklestad, it isn’t a rushed half-day add-on.

Day 5

Day trip southeast to Røros, roughly 2.5 hours by car or the scenic Rørosbanen train, for the UNESCO old town, the Olavsgruva mine tour, and a genuinely strong local food scene.

Tip: consider an overnight in Røros if your schedule allows, the round trip alone is long enough to make a rushed day feel thin.

Day 6

A free day back in Trondheim. Walk the Ladestien coastal path along the fjord, catch up on any museum you missed, Sverresborg’s open-air folk museum is a strong pick, or simply spend the afternoon in Solsiden or back in Bakklandet.

Tip: this is a good day to buy Vinmonopolet wine or spirits to bring home, just not on a Sunday.

Day 7

Another free day, and a good one for whatever the weather suggests: a longer Bymarka loop if it’s clear, or the indoor Trondheim Science Centre’s 3D planetarium if it’s raining. Spend your last evening back in Midtbyen near the cathedral before departure.

Tip: if you’re continuing north by rail, the Nordland Line to Bodø runs about 10 hours and crosses the Arctic Circle, worth booking a sleeper for in advance if you’re extending the trip.

Practical notes

Norway is near-cashless and genuinely expensive, budget a beer at roughly NOK 100-140 and remember Vinmonopolet’s Sunday closures. Britannia Hotel, Clarion Hotel Trondheim, and Scandic Solsiden remain the best-documented lodging picks across the week.
