Day 1: Warsaw Orientation and the Royal Route

Morning

Land at Warsaw Chopin Airport, 10km from the center, and ride the S2/S3 SKM train or bus 175 into town on the same 4.40 PLN ZTM 75-minute ticket that covers trams, buses and the metro citywide. Base yourself in the Old Town or Srodmiescie, both within easy reach of Warszawa Centralna, the departure station for every train on this itinerary.

Afternoon

Walk the Royal Route: Krakowskie Przedmiescie into Nowy Swiat, the ceremonial axis linking the reconstructed Old Town south toward Lazienki Park. The Old Town itself is a post-WWII rebuild, more than 85% of it was destroyed in 1944, and UNESCO listed it in 1980 specifically for that reconstruction. Day 2: Day Trip to Lodz

Morning

Catch an early PKP Intercity train from Warszawa Centralna, 1h15 to Lodz Fabryczna, with 30-plus departures a day roughly every 30-60 minutes. Fares run 25-70 PLN one way depending on how far ahead you book.

Afternoon

Lodz reads industrial and modern, not postcard old town, its money came from 19th-century textile mills, not medieval trade. Manufaktura, a converted red-brick mill turned shopping, museum and entertainment complex, anchors one end; Piotrkowska Street, a mile-plus of cafes, murals and genuine street art, covers the other.

Evening

Check the last train back to Warszawa Centralna on intercity.pl before dinner in Lodz.

Day 3: POLIN, the Uprising Museum and Praga

Morning

Spend the morning at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, in Muranow, opposite the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising Monument. Eight galleries cover a thousand years of Polish Jewish history; entry runs around 45 PLN adult, free every Thursday.

Afternoon

Cross to the Warsaw Uprising Museum in Wola, a former tram power station covering the 63-day 1944 Warsaw Uprising specifically, a separate event from the 1943 Ghetto Uprising covered at POLIN, a year apart and worth keeping straight. Entry runs roughly 25 PLN, also free on Thursdays.

Evening

Cross the Vistula into Praga, the district that dodged the worst of the 1944 destruction and still holds more genuine pre-war building stock than the reconstructed west bank.

Day 4: Zelazowa Wola or Kampinos National Park

Morning

Zelazowa Wola, Chopin’s birthplace, sits 55km west with no train station of its own: take a regional train to Sochaczew, 40-60 minutes, plus a short taxi, or the museum’s own seasonal bus (Monday-Thursday departs the museum at noon, back around 17:30; Friday-Sunday departs 10:00, back around 15:30).

Afternoon

Not a Chopin person? Swap in Kampinos National Park instead, bus 708 from the M1 metro’s Mlociny terminus reaches Truskaw in 25-30 minutes, entry is free, old-growth forest and dunes rather than the bison country some travelers expect.

Evening

Back in Warsaw by dinnertime either way.

Day 5: Day Trip to Torun

Morning

An early PKP Intercity departure covers Torun in 2h10-2h40, with roughly hourly-to-every-three-hour service and fares from 40-190 PLN depending on how far ahead you book.

Afternoon

Torun’s Gothic old town is genuinely UNESCO listed, and Copernicus was born here. Walk the old town walls and the Leaning Tower, then stop for pierniki, the gingerbread Torun’s been making for centuries.

Day 6: Krakow, Day One

Morning

Board an early EIP Pendolino, 2h20-2h26 at the fastest, most other services 2h45-3h. Fares run 49-199 PLN standard, with rare Super Promo tickets from about 29 PLN if you booked the moment they released 30 days out.

Afternoon

Drop bags near the Main Market Square and spend the afternoon on Wawel Castle and the square itself, Europe’s largest medieval town square still functioning as one.

Evening

Day 7: Krakow, Day Two, and the Return

Morning

Spend the morning in Kazimierz, Krakow’s former Jewish quarter, now a mix of historic synagogues and a genuinely good cafe scene. Auschwitz-Birkenau is a separate day trip from Krakow itself, not from Warsaw, worth flagging if history is the priority and you can stretch the trip by a day.

Afternoon

Catch an afternoon Pendolino back to Warszawa Centralna, 2h20-3h depending on the service, landing with enough daylight left for one more Old Town wander.

Evening

Last dinner in Warsaw’s Old Town Square, a fitting bookend to a trip that started in the same spot a week earlier.

Should You Add Auschwitz-Birkenau to the Krakow Nights?

Yes, if history is the priority, this is the one itinerary length with room for it. Auschwitz-Birkenau sits about 1.5 hours from Krakow by car or organized tour, not from Warsaw, so it only makes sense once you’re already overnighting in Krakow on days six and seven. Book a guided tour rather than driving yourself, it handles transport, timed entry and the pace of a genuinely heavy day better than a self-guided trip.
