Day 1: Kraton, Taman Sari, and Malioboro

Land at YIA, out at Kulon Progo, and take the Xpress rail service into Tugu Station, 35 to 40 minutes for Rp40,000 to Rp50,000. Visit the Kraton in the cool morning, entrance around Rp15,000 to Rp25,000, still a working seat of government under Hamengkubuwono X. Walk or becak to Taman Sari’s Water Castle, around Rp15,000 to Rp30,000, then spend the evening on Malioboro: angkringan food, batik shopping, kopi joss near Tugu Station for Rp4,000 to Rp5,000.

Day 2: Borobudur Sunrise and Climb

Catch the sunrise from Punthuk Setumbu hillside, around Rp30,000, then head to Borobudur itself, the 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist monument roughly 40 kilometers and 1 to 1.5 hours from the city. Book the separate, timed climb ticket, around Rp455,000, well ahead of your trip; it includes Upanat sandals and a mandatory guide and is capped near 1,200 climbers a day. Day 3: Prambanan and the Ramayana Ballet

Day 4: Merapi Jeep Lava Tour

Merapi sits at Alert Level 3 (“Siaga”) in 2026, summit closed, but the jeep lava tours run safely outside the danger zone on the lower Kaliurang slopes. Routes range from a short 1.5 to 2 hour loop around Rp350,000 per jeep to a longer 4 to 5 hour route past the buried Bunker Kaliadem for around Rp650,000. Day 5: Kotagede Silver and the Cosmological Axis

What is the Cosmological Axis, and is it worth a half day?

It’s a real, separate UNESCO World Heritage listing, inscribed in 2023, distinct from Borobudur and Prambanan: an 18th-century, roughly 6-kilometer ceremonial line running Mount Merapi to the Kraton to the Tugu Monument, laid out by the sultanate’s founder. It costs nothing to walk and photograph, and it’s a genuinely different way to see the city’s layout than a standard Malioboro stroll.

Spend the morning in Kotagede, the historic silversmithing district and the original 16th-century capital of the Mataram Sultanate, workshops selling filigree jewelry by the piece and royal tombs from that earlier era tucked among the streets.
