Day 1: Arrival and the Car-Free Village
- Arrive by rail through Visp on the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, or park at Tasch (from CHF 16/day) and ride the Zermatt Shuttle the last 12 minutes into the village
- Walk Bahnhofstrasse end to end, then Hinterdorf, roughly 30 larch-wood barns and stables on stone mouse-guard stilts, some dating to the 1600s
- Visit the mountaineers’ cemetery behind St Mauritius church
- Late afternoon, walk to Kirchbrucke over the Vispa river for a first look at the Matterhorn
- Dinner: fondue or raclette, CHF 28-42 a head
Day 2: Gornergrat and the Classic View
- Catch the earliest Gornergrat train you can manage, afternoon cloud is the norm here
- Ride the open-air cog railway to 3,089m, CHF 96 return in winter, CHF 132 in summer (confirm current fares on gornergrat.ch ), plus sightlines to the Dufourspitze (4,634m, Switzerland’s actual highest peak)
- Consider hiking down partway to Riffelalp instead of the full descent
Day 3: Sunnegga and the Five Lakes Walk
- Take the underground Sunnegga funicular, about four minutes up to 2,288m, then the Blauherd gondola onward
- Walk the Five Lakes route (5-Seenweg): roughly 9.8km, 2.5 hours, past Stellisee, Grindjisee, Grunsee, Moosjisee and Leisee
- Stellisee delivers the valley’s best still-water Matterhorn reflection
- Descend via Sunnegga back to the village
Day 4: Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
- Ride the multi-stage cable car up to 3,883m, Europe’s highest cable car station
- Return fares run CHF 104 winter, CHF 120 shoulder, CHF 132 peak summer (confirm the current fare calendar on matterhornparadise.ch ), the ticket includes the Glacier Palace ice cave
- Move slowly at the top, children under 3 are barred from the final cable car stage for altitude reasons
Day 5: Matterhorn Alpine Crossing to Cervinia, Italy
- Extend the Glacier Paradise system across the border to Testa Grigia at 3,480m, the highest cable-car border crossing in the Alps, then onward to Cervinia/Breuil
- One-way fares run CHF 127.50 winter, CHF 142 shoulder, CHF 161.50 peak summer
- Bring a passport or ID, it’s a genuine international crossing even without a checkpoint booth at altitude
- Budget the whole day, the transfers plus a look around Cervinia eat most of it
Day 6: Gorner Gorge and a Slow Departure
- Walk the Gorner Gorge (Gornerschlucht), a short walkway through 220-million-year-old rock carved by glacial meltwater, about 15 minutes from the south end of the village plus 30 minutes to walk the gorge itself. Entry is CHF 5.50 adult, cash only, seasonal roughly late May to mid-October
- Spend the rest of the morning on Bahnhofstrasse for souvenirs, this is the cheapest and lowest-effort day of the whole trip by design
- A calm final lunch, then depart via Visp, or continue on the Glacier Express to St Moritz if you’re extending the trip: CHF 152 second class or CHF 268 first class, plus a mandatory CHF 54 seat reservation that no rail pass covers, book the reservation directly on glacierexpress.ch if you’re adding this leg
Is the Gorner Gorge worth a stop? Yes, especially as a wind-down day. It’s the cheapest attraction in Zermatt at CHF 5.50, takes under an hour round trip, and pairs naturally with a village walk rather than demanding its own dedicated day the way the big lifts do.

A Few Things Worth Knowing
Bring cash specifically for the Gorner Gorge, it’s the one attraction here that won’t take a card. Pack real layers and sunscreen for every lift day. Budget CHF 1,050-1,450 total for one traveller across six days, hotel, three lift days, and six real meals, before shopping or a Glacier Express add-on.
Save your lowest-energy day for last. After five days of lifts, altitude and early starts, the Gorner Gorge’s short, low-altitude walk is exactly the pace you’ll actually want before travelling home.
