Shkodër on Foot: Streets, Castle and Hill
Before you set off The centre of Shkodër is flat and small, and most routes take only a few hours. Pavements are broken in places and the approach to the castle is cobbled, so wear shoes with grip. Carry lek in cash for museum desks and cafes, and bring water between May and September.
Route 1: the two hour old-town loop Begin at Sheshi Demokracia, Democracy Square. Turn onto Rruga Kolë Idromeno, the pedestrian street, with its cafes and restored villas.

Nights Away from Shkodër: Theth and Valbona
Plan around the calendar first Shkodër is the starting point for the Albanian Alps, also called the Accursed Mountains (Bjeshkët e Nemuna). Theth and Valbona sit in separate valleys with no road between them, and no regular passenger train serves Shkodër, so every plan rests on shuttles, a ferry and your legs. The season decides what is possible.

Travelling to Shkodër With Kids
A calm city, with no children’s venues Shkodër is a good place for a slow family break, but it has no attractions built for children. There is no zoo, aquarium, theme park or adventure playground in the city. What it has instead is a castle to climb, two small museums, a lake with piers, flat roads for cycling and a beach less than an hour away. Plan one or two relaxed days, and treat the town as a base for easy outings.
