Shkodër on Foot: Streets, Castle and Hill

Before you set off

The centre of Shkodër is flat and small, and most routes take only a few hours. Pavements are broken in places and the approach to the castle is cobbled, so wear shoes with grip. Carry lek in cash for museum desks and cafes, and bring water between May and September.

Route 1: the two hour old-town loop

  1. Begin at Sheshi Demokracia, Democracy Square.
  2. Turn onto Rruga Kolë Idromeno, the pedestrian street, with its cafes and restored villas.
  3. Stop at number 32, the Marubi National Museum of Photography. Its official page lists daily opening from 09:00 to 19:00, and adults pay 700 ALL in cash; see the visit page .
  4. Wander through the Gjuhadol quarter, the historic Catholic district of stone houses, and into neighbouring Sarreq.
  5. Finish beside St Stephen’s Cathedral, with the Orthodox cathedral a short way off.

Route 2: three faiths in ten minutes

St Stephen’s Cathedral, the Ebu Bekr Mosque and the Nativity of Christ Orthodox Cathedral stand within about 10 minutes’ walk of each other. Dress modestly, speak softly and do not enter a mosque during prayers. The Lead Mosque, built in 1773, is a short walk further and free to visit; its Wikipedia entry explains why it is named for lead.

Route 3: along the road to Rozafa Castle

The castle is on the same bank of the Buna as the old town, so you do not cross the river. Count on a 2 to 3 km walk along the road, then the cobbled approach to the gate; carry a map. Entry is about 400 ALL in cash, and summer hours are roughly 08:00 or 09:00 to 19:00 or 20:00.

The Old Buna Bridge, from about 1889, has carried only pedestrians since a new bridge opened in 2011. A local report once called its deck unsafe, so look at it before stepping on and use it only if it is open.

Route 4: the Tarabosh ridge

Shared GPS routes show a round trip of 12 to 14 km, with 500 to 570 m of climbing, rated moderate. Trails start at Shiroka, Canaj or near the castle. Start early, carry water and download an offline map.

Walks beside the lake

The level lakeside road reaches Shiroka after 5 to 8 km and Zogaj after about 12 km. Walk a stretch of it, then catch a taxi or furgon back.

A quiet stop: Site of Witness and Memory

On Bulevardi Skënderbeu 26, a former detention building holds a museum with its original cells on the ground floor. Go in quietly. Listed hours are mornings, 08:30 to 14:30, closed Sunday, so go early and check first. The memory-site map describes the building.
