Verona is small enough that your walk can be sized to your free time. The old town is mostly flat and paved in stone, and three routes cover the main sights. Pick the one that fits the hours you have, then add stops as energy allows. About an hour: Piazza Bra to Sant’Anastasia This route is about 1.5 km and passes most of the famous squares. Start on Piazza Bra, in front of the Arena.

Verona’s landmarks fall into layers, and seeing them in historical order helps the city make sense. Romans laid out the street grid, the Scaliger family left tombs and fortresses from the medieval period, and Renaissance patrons added gardens. Everything below lies within walking distance inside the bend of the Adige. The Roman layer Arena di Verona. The 1st-century amphitheatre on Piazza Bra once held about 30,000 spectators. Daytime visits run Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 19:00, with the last entry at 18:30, and the Arena is closed on Mondays.

Verona works for couples as an evening city: the best moments come as the light drops over the river, and the Arena, the bridges and the restaurants all reward a slow pace. This page is built around one long day and night for two, with a few ideas for extra time and a note on where to stay. Late afternoon: the terrace at Castel San Pietro Climb to Piazzale Castel San Pietro an hour or so before sunset.

Verona lies where the Milan to Venice railway meets the Brenner to Bologna axis, which makes it a practical base for trips of two to four days. Each plan below suits a different length of stay. Rail times are approximate, so check them on Trenitalia before you commit. Plan 1: two to three days in the Dolomites The Dolomites are a trip in their own right, not an extension of a Verona day.

Children do well in Verona because the old town is small and several of the best family outings are a short drive or train ride away. The sections below move from the biggest days out to the short, free ones that fit around nap time. Big days out Parco Natura Viva, Bussolengo. This is a safari park and walking zoo in one site, with a large animal collection. In 2026 it opened for weekends from 14 February, went daily from 28 February and sold tickets valid until 6 January 2027, so it is not a summer-only trip.

Three kinds of day trip work from Verona: a lake outing, a wine outing and a day in another historic city. Verona Porta Nuova station sits on the Milan to Venice line, so the city trips are simple by train, while the wine and lake destinations are easier with a car or a bus connection. Lake days Peschiera del Garda is the nearest lake town, a regional train ride of about 13 to 19 minutes from Verona.

Verona is easiest to plan by the clock. The Roman sights keep daytime hours, the wine bars and hill terraces suit the afternoon, and the Arena comes into its own after dark in summer. Below is a day laid out in that order, followed by a short list of what to do when something is closed. Morning: sights with fixed opening hours Arena di Verona. The Roman amphitheatre on Piazza Bra can be visited Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00, with the last entry at 18:30.
