Verona Activities by Time of Day

Verona is easiest to plan by the clock. The Roman sights keep daytime hours, the wine bars and hill terraces suit the afternoon, and the Arena comes into its own after dark in summer. Below is a day laid out in that order, followed by a short list of what to do when something is closed.

Morning: sights with fixed opening hours

Arena di Verona. The Roman amphitheatre on Piazza Bra can be visited Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00, with the last entry at 18:30. It is closed on Mondays. On performance days it shuts earlier, with reported closing times between 15:30 and 16:30, so go first thing. A full ticket is about 12 EUR and a reduced one about 9 EUR, and the civic museums site at museicivici.comune.verona.it carries the current hours.

Casa di Giulietta. The house at Via Cappello 23 admits visitors by online booking only, made through verona.coopculture.it, and there is no ticket desk at the door. You enter from Piazzetta Navona through Teatro Nuovo. The 5 EUR ticket covers the theatre, courtyard and balcony; the 12 EUR ticket adds the house interiors and the tower. Opening is 09:00 to 19:00 Tuesday to Sunday and 14:00 to 19:00 on Mondays, and the last slot is sold at 18:30. The balcony was built in the 1939 to 1940 restoration from 14th-century marble pieces, so it is best treated as a literary landmark. Gum, graffiti and padlocks are not allowed, and fines apply. Torre dei Lamberti. The 84 m tower opens Monday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00 and at weekends 10:30 to 19:00, with the last admission 20 minutes before closing. It is open every day except 25 December. Tickets are 6 EUR full and 4.50 EUR reduced, a transparent lift runs to the top, and booking is recommended.

Afternoon: wine and a hill terrace

For a glass and a plate of cicchetti, Osteria del Bugiardo at Corso Porta Borsari 17/A is Buglioni-run and pours Valpolicella. Antica Bottega del Vino at Vicolo Scudo di Francia 3 belongs to a group of historic wine families and serves local reds such as Amarone. Prices by the glass change, so read the menu board.

Afterwards, cross the Ponte Pietra and head up to Castel San Pietro. The terrace is free. You can climb the steps or take the Funicolare di Castel San Pietro from Via Fontanelle Santo Stefano 6. It runs daily 10:00 to 21:00 from April to 25 October and 10:00 to 17:00 from 26 October to March, and it does not run on 25 December or 1 January.

Evening: the Arena opera season

The 104th Opera Festival runs from 11 June to 11 September 2027. Opening night on 11 June is Beethoven’s Ninth, and the season adds a new Romeo and Juliet ballet, La Traviata, Nabucco, Carmen, two productions of Aida, Carmina Burana and two Roberto Bolle and Friends evenings. All seats are numbered, including the stone steps, so you can pick a seat and a price rather than queue. The lowest standard price is from about 28 EUR with early booking. Use the official shop at shop.arena.it and read the 2027 rates and sectors before you choose a sector. Bring photo ID.

On the river

The Adige runs fast and has eddies around the bridge piers, so it is not a place to swim or wade. Several local operators run guided urban rafting with helmets and lifejackets. Trips last about 3 hours and cost roughly 20 to 45 EUR, depending on the operator and the date.

If it is Monday or raining

On Monday the Arena, Castelvecchio and the Roman Theatre are closed, but the Torre dei Lamberti is open and Juliet’s House opens at 14:00. In wet weather, the churches and Giardino Giusti are the usual fallbacks; see the attraction tours guide for their hours.

Getting around and staying safe

The VeronaCard costs 33 EUR for 24 hours or 38 EUR for 48 hours, counted from first use, and includes the city buses. It does not include the Aerobus from the airport. Pickpockets work the crowded stretch from Piazza Bra to Piazza delle Erbe and the buses, and rail strikes happen from time to time, so keep valuables zipped and check Trenitalia before a train day.
