Special-access visits in Siena, grouped by what you get to see

Some of Siena’s best experiences are not a walk-in ticket to a gallery. They involve a climb, a guide, a locked door or an email. This page groups them by the kind of access they need rather than by price.

Up high

The cathedral roof route, called Porta del Cielo, leads through the upper galleries and out onto the roof terraces for wide views toward Monte Amiata. It runs from 1 March to 6 January. The adult ticket is a flat EUR 21 and already includes every museum site on the Duomo pass, with EUR 6 for children aged 7 to 11 and free entry under 7. The Torre del Mangia rises 88 metres over the Campo. It costs EUR 10, or EUR 15 with the civic museum, and the ticket is sold only at the Palazzo Pubblico office on the day. There is no lift. Behind closed doors

The contrada museums belong to the city’s seventeen neighbourhood societies and are private, not public. They open only to booked visitors, and each society sets its own price. Museo della Tartuca, on Via Tommaso Pendola, takes bookings by email at museo@tartuca.it . Other contrade, including Oca, Nicchio and Chiocciola, have museums too, so ask each society directly. Never wear another contrada’s neckerchief in someone’s home district.

The Accademia Musicale Chigiana, in Palazzo Chigi-Saracini on Via di Città, offers guided visits to its art and instrument collections. Older listings gave about EUR 7, so confirm the current price and time with the Accademia before you go. Concerts are held in summer.

Water and stone

Siena’s medieval water system is the theme of two visits. The Bottini tunnels allow only groups of ten, nobody under 8, a torch and non-slip shoes, and nothing is offered in June, July or August. Booking is via the Comune. The Museo dell’Acqua at Fonti di Pescaia opens by reservation only, on 0577 292614, and prices are not confirmed. The great fountains of Fontebranda and Fonte Gaia can be seen for free from the street.

What to skip for now

The Pinacoteca Nazionale has been closed for building works since January 2026 and no reopening date is published, so look at its website before you plan around it. The state museums’ Palazzo Chigi Piccolomini alla Postierla is the nearby alternative with longer opening hours.

Tips for booking

Buy Duomo tickets only from the Opera’s own site, not from resellers that add a markup.
Match your day to the tower queue: arrive at the Palazzo Pubblico early, buy the tower ticket first, then visit the museum. On any combined ticket the tower must come first.
For the Bottini, check the Comune’s page often, since slots are released on certain days only.
