An adventure day in Naples is decided by the clock more than by fitness. The tunnels under the old town leave on the hour, the volcano admits walkers in ten-minute batches, and the sea decides each morning whether the Blue Grotto opens at all. Ninety minutes: the city underneath

You go down a staircase of 136 steps to roughly 40 metres below the street, into cisterns and aqueduct channels the Greeks and Romans cut from soft tufa, then on to spaces used as air-raid shelters in the Second World War. One stretch is so tight that you walk it sideways with a candle.

Parties of fewer than 10 can walk in without a reservation, so this fits a gap between lunch and an evening plan. The admission price is not published on the official site, so check it at the desk or when you book. Half a day: the Vesuvius crater

Trail 5 climbs the Gran Cono to the rim of the crater at 1,281 metres, on loose cinder with steam rising from fumaroles. Getting there takes about an hour each way from Naples by train and shuttle, and a guided minibus tour mainly saves you those connections.

The ticket rules are strict:

  • Online only. Tickets are sold at vesuviopark.vivaticket.it for EUR10, or EUR8 for under-25s and park residents, plus a booking fee. Children under 6 go free.
  • Named and timed. Each ticket carries your name and a slot. The gate accepts you from 40 minutes ahead of your slot until 100 minutes past it.
  • Released 30 days ahead, in batches of about 50 every 10 minutes, so summer weekends go early.
  • Hours change by month: 9:00 to 16:00 in October, 9:00 to 15:00 from November to February.
  • Weather closes it. An orange alert shuts the trail and the ticket is refunded automatically.

A full day: Capri from the water

Shared full-day boat trips from Naples cost about EUR85 to EUR160 a person and typically include a cruise along the coast, the Faraglioni rocks, swimming stops and free time ashore.   • Do not drive into the centre. Camera-enforced traffic zones have different hours at each gate, and a fine is roughly EUR80 to EUR335, plus fees.
  • Wear shoes with real grip for the 136 steps and the cinder.
