Forget waiting on a shuttle bus into Bruges, Zeebrugge’s own stretch of North Sea coast is a full outdoor day on its own, and it starts the second you step off the tram. Zeebrugge Strand is the headline act: Belgium’s widest beach, up to 500 meters of sand at low tide and 2 kilometers long, with none of the packed high-rise sprawl of the bigger resorts down the coast. There’s room here to actually spread out, play volleyball, build a serious sandcastle, or just beachcomb for fossilized shark teeth and cockle shells while container ships glide past on the horizon.

Get a group together in Zeebrugge and the whole town starts working in your favor: a working harbor, a fishing fleet, and a sailing club, all built for people showing up in numbers. Start with the boat. A 75-minute harbor cruise on the Franlis boats out of the Tijdok marina takes a full group past the container terminals, the car-carrier wharves, and the LNG installation in one go, with a real shot at spotting grey seals hauled out on the breakwater buoys.

Let’s get one thing straight before you go looking: Zeebrugge has no zoo, no aquarium, and no wildlife park inside the town itself. It’s a working seaport and a wide sand beach, and that’s exactly why the animal encounters that do exist here feel so much more alive than a ticketed exhibit. Go looking on the water first. Grey seals and harbor seals haul out on the navigation buoys and sandbanks past the breakwaters, and passengers on the harbor boat tours spot them regularly on the run out toward the outer port.
