Ha Long Activities From Morning to Night
A day in Ha Long runs on the clock. Cave sites open at 07:30, sightseeing boats must be back in port in the evening, the cable car keeps different hours on weekdays and weekends, and squid fishing only happens on overnight boats. This page orders the main activities by the time of day they work best. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND), at about 26,000 to the US dollar.
Morning: a hot spring or an early boat
Yoko Onsen Quang Hanh, a Japanese style spa village in the Cam Pha district east of the city, opens its public baths for two sessions: 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00. Entry prices change with the package, so read the resort’s own website before you set out.
If you would rather be on the water, day boats may leave from 05:00 in summer and 05:30 in winter. An early start gets you to Ti Top beach and its steps ahead of the crowds, which build from about 10:00.
Midday on the bay
Luon Cave. Luon is on Bo Hon island and is a stop on route VHL2. The way in is a stone arch about 60 m long that only kayaks and bamboo boats can pass, best at low to mid tide. Beyond it is a round lagoon walled by cliffs, home to a group of macaques. Life jackets stay on for the entire session. Other boats use the passage, so swimming inside it is not allowed.
Ti Top island. The island took its name in 1962 from the cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited with Ho Chi Minh. The beach is a crescent of golden sand and the usual swim stop. A climb of about 400 steps leads to a viewpoint. The water is cloudy and busy with boats, and there is no coral, so leave the snorkel at home. Soi Sim beach is closed to visitors, which makes Ti Top the beach you will actually get.
Tung Sau pearl lagoon. Route VHL2 also calls at this lagoon, where you can see the oyster cages and how pearls are started.
Afternoon and dusk: the Queen Cable Car
The Sun World cable car links Bai Chay with Ba Deo hill across about 2.2 km of water. Its 230 person cabin and 188.88 m tower hold Guinness records. On weekdays it runs from 14:00 to 20:00, and on Saturday and Sunday from 09:00 to 20:00, so a late afternoon ride suits any day of the week.
A round trip costs about 380,000 VND for an adult (roughly $15) and about 280,000 VND for a child from 1 m to 1.4 m tall. That ticket also covers the Sun Wheel, the Samurai slide, a wax museum and Kidoland. Current prices are on sunworld.vn .
Night: squid fishing from the deck
Many overnight cruises put out lights and lines after dinner to draw squid beside the boat. Whether it is offered varies by boat, so raise it when you reserve. The best months are October to April, and dark nights work best.
Rules that shape the day
The bay sightseeing fee is charged per person per trip and covers 06:30 to 18:30. It is 250,000 VND on VHL1, VHL2 and VHL5 and 200,000 VND on VHL3 and VHL4, and it usually sits inside the cruise price. The Management Board fee page lists every route.
Caves close at 17:30 up to 31 October and at 17:00 from 1 November to 15 April. Boats are due back in port by 20:00 in summer and 19:00 in winter. Storm season runs from May to November, and a typhoon warning can cancel or shorten a sailing, so keep a spare day in your plans. In January and February, fog and temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees Celsius take the shine off swimming.
