Ha Long Trip Guide for Parents
With children, most of the risk in Ha Long comes from three things: water, steps and monkeys. This page puts those first, then covers what children pay and which outings suit them. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND), at about 26,000 to the US dollar.
Six rules before you go
- Fit life jackets early. Kayak and bamboo boat sessions require them for the whole time. The UK Foreign Office advises having a life jacket whenever you join a boat, so ask the crew for child sizes before the engine starts.
- Plan for steep steps. The climb into Sung Sot cave is steep, and the path at Thien Cung and the 400 steps at Ti Top turn slick after rain. Strollers cannot manage them, so carry babies in a front or back carrier.
- Keep away from macaques. The monkeys on Monkey Island, near Cat Ba, and around the Luon Cave lagoon are macaques. They bite, and a bite can lead to serious infection. Keep food and bags hidden, hold children close and never let them touch the animals.
- Stay within reach at the beach. Bai Chay beach is free. Do not count on a lifeguard being posted, and stay within arm’s length of small children in the water.
- Skip the closed or unsafe water. Soi Sim beach is closed, and the Luon Cave tunnel is a boat channel where nobody swims.
- Watch the weather. Storm season runs from May to November, and a typhoon warning can cancel a sailing. October to April gives the clearest conditions.

Outings that suit children
Sun World in Bai Chay. Dragon Park reopened on 13 March 2026. It is shut from Monday to Thursday, opens on Friday from about 13:00 to 17:00, and opens on Saturday and Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00, so build your visit around a weekend. The water park reopened on 12 April 2026 and runs seasonally, so expect it to be closed in winter. The official Sun World site carries the current calendar.
The Queen Cable Car. The ride across the strait is about 2.2 km and gives a calm break between rides. The round trip ticket includes the Sun Wheel, the Samurai slide, a wax museum and Kidoland on Ba Deo hill. On weekdays it opens at 14:00, and at weekends at 09:00.
Quang Ninh Museum. This is the indoor option for a hot or wet afternoon. The black glass building in Hon Gai is open 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:00, and outside it stands a 28 tonne block of anthracite coal. Check whether it is closed on Monday. The Vietjet destination page lists the fees.
Ti Top beach. The golden sand is the best swim stop on a bay trip, though it is crowded in summer. The water is cloudy with boat traffic, so there is no snorkelling.
A day boat. The bay fee covers 06:30 to 18:30, and boats are back in port by 20:00 in summer and 19:00 in winter. The Foreign Office also advises weighing safety standards carefully before any overnight trip, which is one more reason a day cruise is the simpler first choice with small children (FCDO advice ).
