Cai Rang’s genuine trading window runs roughly 05:00 to 08:30, and the market has thinned to about 200 boats today from around 500 in 2016, so a day trip from the city catches its tail end at best. Two to three days changes that: an evening arrival in Can Tho, a pre-dawn boat out to the market at its real hour, then a full day among canals, orchards, and rice-noodle workshops before the drive back. Cat Tien National Park
About 150 km and 3.5-4.5 hours out in Dong Nai province, Cat Tien is southern Vietnam’s premier lowland rainforest reserve and suits a 2-3 day trip: jungle trekking under tung and lagerstroemia trees, night spotlighting safaris for sambar deer, wild boar, and civets, and a trek or jeep ride to Bau Sau (Crocodile Lake) for endangered Siamese crocodiles and endemic primates, including golden-cheeked gibbons and black-shanked douc langurs. Vietnam’s last Javan rhino was poached here in 2010, and tigers are functionally extinct in the reserve today, so don’t expect either on a wildlife checklist.
