Things to Do in Jamaica by Region
Travel advice: UK FCDO guidance describes high violent crime in Jamaica, centred on inner-city neighbourhoods, and says robbery is the usual motive when tourists are targeted. The US State Department rates the island Level 2 and names specific high-crime communities to stay out of. Parts of the west and south coast are still rebuilding after Hurricane Melissa (October 2025). Current guidance is on gov.uk and travel.state.gov .
Jamaica’s activities gather around four bases, and a single day rarely stretches across two of them. Choose the base first, then fill the day from the options below. Resort-area attractions quote their prices in US dollars. Taxis, snacks and craft stalls run on Jamaican dollars (JMD), at roughly 155 to 165 JMD to the US dollar. Hurricane season lasts from 1 June to 30 November, so keep your plans loose.
North coast: Ocho Rios and St Ann
Dunn’s River Falls is the island’s best-known outing. A guide leads each group up the cascade in a human chain, and the climb covers about 180 metres (roughly 600 feet) of wet rock, so closed water shoes are essential. The park opens daily from 8:30 to 16:00, with an earlier 7:00 start on cruise-ship days (Wednesday to Friday). Non-resident adults pay about US$25 and children about US$17, so confirm the fee before you go. Beyond the climb you will find a splash pad, a waterslide, a beach and a craft market. The park reopened on 11 November 2025, and its own site is dunnsriverfallsja.com .
Chukka Seville Outpost in St Ann runs ATV safaris and a Horseback Ride ’n’ Swim. Its “Coast to Caves” day, from about US$174 with transfers from Ocho Rios or Falmouth, strings together Green Grotto Caves, an ATV ride, a horseback ride, lunch and a catamaran trip at Dunn’s River. Chukka quotes “starting from” prices. ATV riders need a valid driving licence, and every guest needs closed-toe shoes. Details are on Chukka’s Seville page .
Mystic Mountain is reported open above Ocho Rios, with a SkyExplorer chairlift and the Rainforest Bobsled, whose track is about a kilometre long. A cruise-line listing gives a 3 ft 8 in minimum rider height and a 300 lb weight limit. Current prices are not confirmed, so ask when you book.
Montego Bay and Falmouth
Chukka Ocean Outpost at Sandy Bay collects guests from Montego Bay and Negril. The pass is from about US$164 and bundles horseback riding, an ocean zip line, an ATV or dune buggy, a party catamaran, reef snorkelling and a truck safari. Ocean bamboo rafting adds about US$10. Chukka reopened its sites from November 2025, the last of them in June 2026, but check the outpost you want before you pay (Ocean Outpost ).
Martha Brae rafting starts in Trelawny, about 30 minutes from Montego Bay. A licensed captain poles a 30-foot bamboo raft for 3 miles in 75 minutes, and life vests come with it. Rafts run daily from 9:00 to 16:00, holidays included, and the water is flat. The operator lists no price, and packages sold with transport typically run well over US$100 per person. The Swamp Safari Village in Falmouth was destroyed by the hurricane and is closed (operator FAQ ).
St Elizabeth: rum country
The Joy Spence Rum Experience at Appleton Estate is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9:00 to 15:30. Entrance alone is about US$39, and the walk-through covers a cane-milling stop, copper pot stills, the ageing houses and a tasting room. The estate was among the hardest hit in the parish, and nothing official confirms a full reopening, so phone 876-448-2237 before the drive. See the estate’s visit page .
Kingston: reggae history
The Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road runs hourly Home Tours from 10:00 to 16:00, Monday to Saturday, at US$25 for adults and US$12 for ages 4 to 12. The separate Tuff Gong studio tour is at 220 Marcus Garvey Drive, at US$20 for adults, and a combined ticket costs US$40. Book on the museum’s site , and go by hotel-arranged or JTB-approved taxi.
Getting around
