Luxembourg Activities by Cost and Season

The best way to sort Luxembourg’s activities is by what they cost and when they run. A handful are free all year, several are tied to a warm-weather season, and a few work in any month. Everything is priced in euros. Travel is rarely a budget line: second-class trains, trams and buses are free across the country, and only first class on trains is paid.

Free in any month

Mullerthal Trail. The official network covers about 112 km of waymarked sandstone country around Echternach, Berdorf and Larochette. Routes 2 and 3 both pass the Schiessentumpel waterfall and its 1879 stone bridge, and Route 2 squeezes through the Kuelscheier rock passage. That passage is very narrow and dark, so carry a torch.
Pfaffenthal lift and funicular. The panoramic lift links Pescatore park with the valley below, and the funicular climbs 40 m in 63 seconds to the Kirchberg tram. Neither costs anything. The lift is listed as open from 05:45 to 01:00 and is out of order on the first Monday of each month.
Luxtram T1. The line runs from Findel Airport through Gare Centrale to Stadion/Cloche d’Or, 24 stops in all, with no fare.

Hunters work the woods from mid-October to January or February, so look at the hunt dates on the Mullerthal map before a winter walk. In the north and east, keep to waymarked paths and leave any metal object lying in a field or wood alone, because old munitions are still found there.

Open most of the year

Caves St Martin, Remich. These limestone tunnels at 53 route de Stadtbredimus stretch for nearly a kilometre and can only be seen on a guided tour of about 45 minutes. The traditional tour includes a glass of wine or cremant and costs EUR 9. Listed hours are Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:30, from mid-March to mid-December.

Belval blast furnaces, Esch-sur-Alzette. The old steelworks on Avenue du Rock’n’Roll are open from 10:00 to 19:00 and closed on Tuesday. Entry is EUR 5, or EUR 3 for people aged 65 and over or with reduced mobility. Under-21s walk in free.

Warm-weather season only

Vianden chairlift. It is the only chairlift in the country. The 2026 season ran from 4 April to 19 October, so plan for April to October and check dates for the new year. A return ticket is EUR 9.50 for adults and EUR 5 for children under 14.
Solar boat on the Upper Sure Lake. A guided trip of about two hours leaves from Insenborn between 1 May and 1 October. It must be booked, does not sail on Mondays and does not take dogs. Adults pay EUR 10 and children under 13 pay EUR 5.
Paddling. The Lultzhausen youth hostel rented canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards from late May to mid-September in 2026. Prices were per boat, from EUR 22 for three hours, with a EUR 100 deposit. Ages 5 to 17 need an adult in the party.
Swimming. Official bathing areas on the Upper Sure Lake and at Echternach lake open from 1 May to 30 September. A beach can be closed at short notice if toxins are found in the water, so read the notice posted at the shore.

A budget rule of thumb

If your plan is walking, lifts and one cellar tour, you will spend very little. If you want three or four paid sights in a day, such as casemates, a castle and a museum, price them against the LuxembourgPass, which starts from about EUR 23 for one day and is valid for sights only, never for transport.

What the country does not have

There is no downhill skiing in the Grand Duchy, and canyoning, white-water rafting and skydiving are not on offer. Rock climbing is allowed only on the Wanterbaach rocks at Berdorf, and only for members of a recognised climbing association who can show proof. Visitors who want to climb for an hour can use the 14 m indoor wall at the Echternach youth hostel instead.
