Bulgaria Day Trips by Budget From Sofia

A day trip from Sofia can cost the price of a train ticket or the price of a private charter. Sorting the options by what you spend shows which ones fit your wallet and your day.

Under €10 on the ground

Plovdiv is the budget winner. The state railway runs Sofia to Plovdiv in about two and a half hours for roughly €5 to €8 one way, and coaches take around 1h40 to 2h20 at a higher fare. The old town’s cobbled streets cost nothing, and the Nebet Tepe hill gives the view for free. Add a few euros for the Roman theatre or a house museum and the day stays cheap. Between €10 and €25

Driving opens up the next tier, and the e-vignette is the fixed cost. Bulgaria has no toll booths, and every car needs an electronic vignette from bgtoll.bg : €10 for a week or €6.60 for a weekend. A rental agency may already have activated one, so ask at pickup.

With a car, Rila Monastery is about 117 km away and costs nothing to enter, apart from the museum at about €4. Belogradchik is roughly 170 km northwest, with red rock towers and a fortress at €7.50 for adults. Allow about three hours each way. East of the capital, Kazanlak is about two and a half hours away. Its tomb replica in Tyulbeto Park costs about €5, and the surrounding rose valley is at its best from late May to June.

Above €25

Guided days cost more and remove the driving. A shared tour combining Rila Monastery and Boyana Church usually lands between about €30 and €40, and you can compare Sofia day tours on Viator to see current listings. A guided Seven Rila Lakes trek from Sofia runs roughly €40 to €60, and some operators include the lift. Private charters to Belogradchik cost well over €100.

The lakes also work as a self-drive trip: Panichishte is about 90 km and 1.5 hours from Sofia, and the chairlift is €16 return per adult. The lift has maintenance closures, so look at the lift schedule before leaving. The trail is a summer walk, from late June to September.

How to choose

  • Cheapest full day: Plovdiv by train.
  • Best value by car: Rila Monastery, with free entry, then the lakes if the weather is clear.
  • Best without driving: a shared tour to Rila and Boyana.
