Guided Outings You Can Book from Hlabisa

Nobody runs tours from inside Hlabisa village. The outings you can book around here start at a park camp, at the St Lucia estuary or at a lodge, so the useful question is where each one departs and how far you drive to reach it. Prices are in South African rand (R).

Departing from St Lucia

St Lucia town is about 76 km from Hlabisa, around 1 hour 40 minutes by road, and two companies run two-hour estuary cruises from there.

Shoreline Boat Safari (Heritage Tours & Safaris, +27 35 590 1555) uses a 15-seat shallow-draft boat and serves tea or coffee on board.
Advantage Tours (+27 35 590 1259) uses a large passenger vessel with a sundeck, a bar and toilets.

Advantage sails at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00 from 15 September to 14 April, then at 10:00, 12:00 and 15:00 until 14 September. Ask each company for its current fare. Hippos and crocodiles turn up often, but nobody can promise a sighting. Shoreline also arranges permit-only night turtle tours to Cape Vidal from about November to March.

Full-Day Park Safaris

Heritage Tours & Safaris and other firms sell a full day in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP). Pick-up is from St Lucia or Hluhluwe, so from Hlabisa you would drive to the meeting point first. Prices differ a lot between sellers, so ask the operator for its own figure before you book.

Ezemvelo Drives Inside the Park

For a shorter outing, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife runs drives from Mpila Camp, about 39 km from Hlabisa, and from Hilltop Camp.

Cost: R420 per person, sold as R1,680 for four.
Format: open 10-seat vehicles at Mpila, about 2 to 2.5 hours.
Times: early starts at 05:00 in summer and 06:00 in winter, and sundowner drives at 18:00 from Monday to Saturday or 17:00 on Sunday.
Rules: children under 3 are not allowed. Booking is at camp reception or on +27 33 845 1067.

Add the daily conservation fee, about R300 to R320 per international adult. That figure comes from the tariff that runs to 31 October 2026, and a new year starts on 1 November, so check it first.

Rhino Ridge Lodge Activities

Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge sits inside HiP. Its guided drives, walks, night drives, birding and community visits are arranged for people staying there. Drives take children from age 6, and walks take them from 14.

Sorting Out the Trip
