Taking Children Out from Hlabisa
What a family can do near Hlabisa depends mostly on how old the children are. The village has no playgrounds or child attractions of its own, and the rural roads are long, so days out centre on Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP), the St Lucia estuary and a few picnic spots. Prices are in South African rand (R).
Babies and Toddlers
Children under 3 are not allowed on Ezemvelo guided drives, so a self-drive in your own car is the practical choice. From the village, the park’s Nyalazi Gate is a 21 km drive. The conservation fee is charged per person per day, with a lower rate for children: about R150 to R160 for an international child under 12, or about R75 to R80 for a South African or SADC resident child with ID. The adult fee is about R300 to R320 for international visitors.
Everyone stays inside the vehicle except at marked sites, and gates close on time, about 18:00 in winter and 19:00 in summer. These figures are from the tariff that ends on 31 October 2026, and a new year starts on 1 November.
Primary-School Ages
- Picnic sites: Mpila has braai places and toilets inside the camp, and Maphumulo has them too. Sontuli looks over the Black Mfolozi. Fencing differs between sites, so keep children within arm’s reach and watch for animals.
- St Lucia cruise: the town is about 76 km away, 1 hour 40 minutes by road. Advantage Tours runs a two-hour cruise on a large vessel with shade, a sundeck and toilets. Hippos and crocodiles are likely, never guaranteed, and children should stay back from the rail.
- Mpophomeni trail at False Bay: a self-guided walk of 1.5 to 2 hours. It is long for small legs and not a toddler outing, and hippos and crocodiles are in the area, so stay on the path.
Ages 6 and Up
Rhino Ridge Safari Lodge, inside HiP, takes children on its guided drives from age 6. Its guided walks start at 14, and its family rooms suit stays with children.
Teenagers
Ezemvelo guided walks take no one under 12 at Mpila, and the tariff sets 13. The iMfolozi wilderness trails, which last 2 to 4 nights, take walkers from 14 with a parent or guardian and from 16 without one.
Water and Health
Do not paddle, wade or swim in rivers, lakes or dams here, because crocodiles and hippos live in them and bilharzia is a freshwater risk across the region. Northern KwaZulu-Natal is a seasonal malaria area, so see a travel clinic about prophylaxis for the whole family, use repellent and cover arms and legs at dusk. Avoid driving after dark: carjacking is a risk and animals stray onto roads.
