Krakow Attraction Tours That Deliver

Kraków’s guided attractions split neatly into two kinds: things you cannot see without a guide, and things a guide simply makes better. Wieliczka is the first kind, and it is the one to build a day around. Schindler’s Factory, the Rynek Underground and the Cold War shelter under Nowa Huta are the second kind, and all three reward turning up with a ticket already on your phone.
Wieliczka is guided by rule, and the walk is longer than it sounds
There is no independent walking of either route at the salt mine. The Tourist Route runs about 3.5 km on foot, descends to roughly 135 m, takes in around 800 steps with about 380 of them in the first descent, and holds a steady 17 to 18°C whatever the surface is doing. It lasts two to three hours and finishes at St Kinga’s Chapel, carved entirely from rock salt 101 m underground, along with the Kraków Saltworks Museum. The Miners’ Route is the alternative: overalls, tools, industrial history, a higher minimum age.
Price is a ladder set by route, guide language, concession and season, with the mine’s own line reading “from 93 zł per person” and Polish-language departures costing less than foreign-language ones. Schindler’s Factory needs original photo ID for every visitor
That rule catches people out more than the price does, and there are no exceptions. The factory is at ul. Lipowa 4 in Zabłocie, across the river in Podgórze, a twenty-minute walk over the Bernatek footbridge from Kazimierz. Its permanent exhibition is “Kraków under Nazi Occupation 1939 to 1945”, which is broader than Oskar Schindler’s story and broader than the film.
Tickets are 60 / 45 PLN with a family ticket at 120, and a regular guided tour in English is 90 PLN. Online sales open 90 days ahead and close six hours before the slot, entry is allowed within 15 minutes of the ticketed time, and the box office caps at five tickets a head. Opening is Monday 10:00 to 15:00, Tuesday to Sunday 9:00 to 20:00, closed the first Tuesday of the month. Mondays are free, but nothing can be booked online on the free day. Nowa Huta has a shelter under a school and a Trabant on the street
Podziemna Nowa Huta is entered through the main door of a working school at os. Szkolne 37 and exhibited as “Underground Nowa Huta: State of Danger”. It costs 18 PLN or 14 reduced, 36 for a family, and is free on Tuesdays. Trams 4, 10 and 22 reach the district in about half an hour from the Old Town on a standard single ticket.
Above ground, Crazy Guides runs real Trabants and Soviet Ladas through the socialist-realist boulevards, with a 2.5 hour standard option and a 3.5 hour Deluxe at 179 PLN that adds the abandoned Lenin Steelworks and a pierogi lunch, plus a period restaurant and a 1950s shop interior. Nowa Huta was built from 1949 to plant a loyal industrial working class next to intellectual, religious Kraków, and its steelworkers went on to become a centre of anti-communist resistance.
Tyniec Abbey gives you three completely different ways in
The Benedictine abbey sits on a limestone bluff over the Vistula about 12 km south-west, and the way you arrive changes the visit. Bus 112 from Rondo Grunwaldzkie takes about 25 minutes. A dedicated riverside cycle path gets you there in under an hour. Or the five-hour Vistula cruise from the Wawel pier runs out to it and back.
The outer courtyard is free from 6:00 to 22:00. Museum and interiors are 7 PLN adult or 5 concession, a joint ticket 8 PLN, a family ticket 25 and a guided tour 6, with guided departures Monday to Saturday at 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:00 and Sundays at 14:00 and 15:00. Is the Rynek Underground worth booking ahead?
Yes, and it is the Kraków ticket most likely to be gone by the time you want it. The museum sits beneath the Main Market Square, showing 13th and 14th-century market stalls under glass floors laid over the original cobbles, and it opened in 2010. Entry is 45 / 35 PLN with a family ticket at 90, timed, sold at bilety.mhk.pl . It is free on Tuesdays, when it runs 10:00 to 15:00, box office only, five a head.
Wawel’s twelve exhibitions, and the listing they sit inside
The castle is part of the Historic Centre of Kraków, inscribed in 1978 as one continuous listing covering the Old Town, Wawel Hill, Kazimierz and Stradom. Tickets are sold by floor: 57 / 43 PLN each, 95 / 71 combined, plus the Crown Treasury and Armoury at 47 / 35 and a “Looking for the Dragon” family route at 35 / 26. The Dragon’s Den at 15 / 10 is an empty limestone cave on a one-way stair, and it closes around 31 October along with the Viewing and Sandomierska Towers.
Kraków itself was the royal capital until the court moved to Warsaw in 1596, which is why the coronations happened on this hill and the government did not.
Auschwitz-Birkenau is booked through the Memorial
Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940 to 1945) lies about 65 to 70 km west of Kraków. Plan the whole day for it and nothing else.
All entry is booked online at visit.auschwitz.org , and on-site sales ended on 1 March 2026. Admission to the grounds is free; a guide-educator is what is paid for, at 150 PLN or 140 reduced for the 3.5 hour general tour and 190 / 170 for the six-hour study tour, with Polish-language departures 10 to 20 PLN cheaper. Unaccompanied entry is possible only after a monthly cutoff, 13:00 in December rising to 17:00 between April and September, a free pass must be reserved at least seven days ahead, and one reservation admits a maximum of ten people. A free shuttle links the two sites across 3.5 km, bags are limited to 35 by 25 by 15 cm with free lockers for anything larger, and the visitor regulations changed on 1 July 2026.
Book Wieliczka and the Rynek Underground the week before you fly, and leave Schindler’s Factory to a Monday only if you are willing to queue at the box office.
