Krakow puts six genuinely different day trips within easy reach, and only one of them is the famous one. Wieliczka Salt Mine (30 minutes) and Nowa Huta (30 minutes, inside city limits) are easy half days. Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains (2-2.5 hours) want a full day, or an overnight in peak season. Auschwitz-Birkenau (1.5-2 hours) is not a sightseeing stop: it’s a solemn visit to a memorial and mass murder site, booked only through its own official channel, and it deserves the whole day on its own. Wieliczka Salt Mine, the easiest half day
About 30 minutes from Krakow by train or minibus, Wieliczka has been a working salt mine since the 13th century and is one of the original 12 sites on the entire UNESCO World Heritage List, inscribed in 1978, a separate listing from Krakow’s own Old Town. Two routes, same price: the Tourist Route (about 2.5 hours, classic sightseeing, ending at St Kinga’s Chapel, carved entirely from rock salt) and the Miners’ Route (about 3 hours, hands-on, overalls and tools, an industrial-history focus). Both run 143 PLN regular, 121 PLN reduced. Book online at bilety.kopalnia.pl , slots sell out 3-5 days ahead in peak season. English-language Tourist Route departures run roughly every 30 minutes, 9am-3pm; early morning or after 3pm is quietest. Auschwitz-Birkenau, the solemn day
Auschwitz-Birkenau, formally the Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940-1945), sits about 1.5-2 hours west of Krakow near the town of Oświęcim. This is not a sightseeing stop. It is the site where Nazi Germany murdered more than a million people, most of them Jews, and it is visited today as a memorial, not an attraction.
All entry is booked online only, at visit.auschwitz.org . On-site ticket sales ended in March 2026, and nothing is sold at the gate. Free individual self-guided entry can be reserved up to 7 days ahead and runs in the late afternoon and evening only; a shifting morning-to-afternoon window (as early as a 1pm cutoff in December, as late as 5pm in high summer) is reserved for paid guide-educator tours, about 150 PLN, 140 PLN reduced, roughly 3.5 hours, bookable up to 3 months out. A free shuttle connects Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau roughly every 12 minutes.
Some Krakow tour operators bundle transport with an educator-led visit, which is how many visitors actually go, but book directly through the official site first and treat any tour operator as secondary.
Code of conduct: dress and behave as you would at any memorial, no eating or drinking on the grounds, no photography in the Block 4 hair room or the Block 11 basement, and the site itself advises against bringing children under 14. Give the day to this alone. Don’t stack it with other sightseeing, and leave room afterward to sit with it rather than rushing back into a packed schedule.
Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains, the full mountain day
About 2-2.5 hours south by bus (FlixBus and others, roughly 30-55 PLN, hourly from the MDA bus station) or a slower train. On summer weekends and school holidays the trip can stretch to 3.5-4 hours each way, so consider an overnight instead of a rushed there-and-back if you’re travelling then. Krupówki Street is the main pedestrian promenade for shops, oscypek (smoked sheep’s-milk cheese, look for the genuine EU-protected version) and restaurants. The Gubałówka funicular climbs about 300 vertical meters in under 4 minutes (round trip roughly 37-44 PLN online); the Kasprowy Wierch cable car reaches a 1,987m summit in about 20 minutes (round trip around 130 PLN, and the ticket doubles as Tatra National Park entry for the day). Morskie Oko, Poland’s most-visited hike, is a glacial lake at 1,395m reached by an 8km mostly-paved trail (about 2 hours each way on foot) from the Palenica Białczańska car park, which fills by 7-8am in season if you’re driving. Nowa Huta, the offbeat half day inside the city
Nowa Huta doesn’t need a bus out of town: it’s inside city limits, reached by tram lines 4, 10, or 22 (about 30 minutes from Old Town or the main station) on a standard MPK single-ride ticket, about 6 PLN. Built from 1949 as a Soviet-style planned town around a massive steelworks, it’s wide boulevards and monumental socialist-realist architecture, worth an afternoon rather than a full day. About 30 minutes from the city, Ojcowski National Park is Poland’s smallest national park, a limestone gorge along the Prądnik river with roughly 400 caves and the “Trail of the Eagle’s Nests” chain of castle ruins. The ruined Gothic Ojców Castle and the intact, much-photographed Renaissance Pieskowa Skała Castle anchor the walk. Day-tour products run 4-7 hours and typically bundle transport, a guide, and castle entry, useful if you’d rather not work out local buses for a half day.
Wadowice, for Pope John Paul II
About 50km, 1-1.25 hours by bus or train, Wadowice is Karol Wojtyła’s hometown. The John Paul II Family Home Museum, built around his actual childhood apartment (around 1,000m² over 3 floors), is the main draw, about an hour with a guide, and it’s walkable from the train station.
How many day trips can you actually fit into a Krakow trip?
