Rynek Glowny: Krakow's Main Square

Rynek Glowny is free to stand in and worth every minute of it: laid out in 1257, roughly 200 by 200 meters, and still one of the largest medieval market squares surviving in Europe. The square itself costs nothing; the buildings on and under it are where the tickets start. Budget 2-3 hours to do the square’s highlights properly.

Cloth Hall and St Mary’s Basilica: the square’s two icons
The Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) runs down the center of the square; the ground floor is a working market for amber, leather, and wooden toys, and it’s free to walk through. Upstairs, the National Museum’s Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art costs 35 PLN, official details at mnk.pl , and is free on Tuesdays, which also makes Tuesday the gallery’s busiest day. St Mary’s Basilica, on the northeast corner, holds Veit Stoss’s carved wooden altarpiece, finished in 1489, viewable up close for around 15 PLN. The hejnal trumpet call sounds from the taller of its two towers every hour, cutting off mid-note, and it’s free to hear from anywhere in the square at any hour of the day or night.
Is the Rynek Underground Museum worth the ticket?
Yes, if you book ahead. The 36 PLN museum sits in genuine archaeological excavations 4 meters below the square, walkways over 13th-14th-century market stalls and original cobblestones. It’s one of Krakow’s most-booked-out sights in summer and the one most likely to sell out same-day, so reserve a timed slot rather than showing up and hoping.
Town Hall Tower and the rest of the square
The Town Hall Tower, the only surviving piece of the old town hall, costs 22 PLN and gives the best rooftop angle over the square and the Cloth Hall’s roofline; it’s an easy add-on once you’re already climbing towers for the Basilica or the Cathedral.
