Krakow Day Trips: Real Travel Times

Kraków’s day-trip hinterland is deep enough that the hard part is choosing, and the choice comes down to one question: half day or whole day. Wieliczka, Ojców and Nowa Huta are all back by lunch or early afternoon. Auschwitz-Birkenau, Zakopane and Częstochowa take everything you have. Mixing the two categories is what ruins Kraków itineraries.

Wieliczka is the half day everything else is measured against
The mine sits about 13 km south-east, and the cheap way there is the SKA1 suburban train from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia in about half an hour. That is the same line that runs out to the airport. Buses go too, but they leave from around the main station rather than the Main Market Square.
Everything underground is guided, with no unguided option on either route. The Tourist Route is about 3.5 km on foot down to roughly 135 m over around 800 steps at a constant 17 to 18°C, two to three hours, ending at the rock-salt St Kinga’s Chapel. Ojcow is 16 km north and its symbol is a bat
Poland’s smallest national park, about 2,146 hectares of limestone gorge along the Prądnik. Nearly 700 caves have been inventoried inside it, of which Łokietek and Ciemna are the show caves, Ciemna also being a significant prehistoric site. The signature rock formation is the Brama Krakowska, the Kraków Gate: two limestone columns about 15 m high standing roughly 7 m apart where the Prądnik valley meets the Ciasne Skałki ravine.
Bats are the park’s emblem, with 17 of the 25 bat species found in Poland living here. If you want to see a European bison near Kraków, the place is the Ośrodek Hodowli Żubrów breeding centre in the Niepołomice Forest east of the city, established in 1936 and holding around sixteen animals, with a public viewing platform built outside the fence in 2023 on the Droga Królewska. Is Zakopane doable as a day trip from Krakow?
Yes, and in August it is a bad day trip. Buses run from Kraków’s MDA station, up to sixteen departures a day, scheduled at roughly 1h45 to 2h but realistically 2 to 2h30 in normal traffic and stretching to 3h30 or 4h on summer weekends and school holidays. The train is slower. Do the arithmetic before you commit a day to it.
On the ground: Krupówki street, the Gubałówka funicular climbing about 300 m in under four minutes, and the Kasprowy Wierch cable car to 1,987 m, whose ticket doubles as Tatra National Park entry for the day. Morskie Oko is Poland’s most-walked trail, about 8 km of mostly paved road each way from the Palenica Białczańska car park, which fills by seven or eight in the morning in season. Nowa Huta is a half day and it never leaves the city
Trams 4, 10 and 22 reach the district in about half an hour on a standard single ticket, no coach and no booking. It was built from 1949 around what was then the Lenin Steelworks: wide boulevards, monumental socialist realism, Plac Centralny and the later Lord’s Ark church. Underneath it, Podziemna Nowa Huta is a genuine Cold War shelter beneath a school at 18 / 14 PLN, free on Tuesdays.
The point of the district is the irony in how it turned out. It was planted beside religious, intellectual Kraków to grow a loyal industrial working class, and its steelworkers became a centre of anti-communist resistance.
Auschwitz-Birkenau is a full day and the only thing in it
Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1940 to 1945) is about 65 to 70 km west of Kraków, roughly 1h15 to 1h30 by road and closer to two hours each way once transfers and the free shuttle between the two sites are counted.
All entry is booked online at visit.auschwitz.org , and on-site sales ended on 1 March 2026. Admission to the grounds is free and what is paid for is a guide-educator: 150 PLN or 140 reduced for the 3.5 hour general tour, with Polish-language departures 10 to 20 PLN cheaper. Entering without a guide is possible only after a cutoff that moves each month, from 13:00 in December up to 17:00 between April and September, and a free pass has to be reserved no later than seven days ahead for a maximum of ten people. All pass types open 90 days before the visit and are personalised and non-refundable. Bags are limited to 35 by 25 by 15 cm, with free lockers at the visitor centre. Wadowice and Czestochowa, for two very different reasons
Wadowice is about 50 km away, 45 minutes to 1h15 by bus or train, and it is Karol Wojtyła’s home town. The John Paul II Family Home Museum is built around his actual childhood apartment and takes about an hour guided, walkable from the station, with the Basilica of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary next door as the parish church he grew up in.
Częstochowa is 120 to 140 km north-west and takes 1.5 to 2 hours each way. The fortified Pauline monastery at Jasna Góra holds the Black Madonna and draws over four million pilgrims a year; the icon is unveiled twice daily and weekday mornings are quietest. It is a whole day and it is only worth it if you have a reason to go.
What “rafting near Krakow” actually means
The Dunajec Gorge trip, roughly 100 km south-east in the Pieniny. It is a punted wooden raft on flat water through a limestone gorge, run by a highlander raftsmen’s cooperative, and it is a full day in its own right. Go for the gorge walls and the raftsmen, not for rapids.
Put Wieliczka on your first spare morning and keep Auschwitz-Birkenau on a day where nothing else is scheduled.
