Guided Visits to Manama Landmarks
Check before you book (October 2026). Bahrain came under Iranian missile and drone attack from 28 February 2026, including a hit on a hotel in central Manama. A ceasefire has held since 8 April, with reported violations and later drone and cyber incidents, and airspace and the King Fahd Causeway have closed with little warning. Read the UK FCDO advice and the US State Department advisory , speak to your insurer and airline, and expect guided tours to be rescheduled or cancelled on security grounds.
Free and official, or paid and private
Guided visits in Manama fall into two groups. The first is free or cheap and run by the sites themselves: the mosque desk, the Qal’at al-Bahrain museum and the Pearling Path centres. The second is the paid coach or minibus day run by local companies. Neither group includes a hop-on hop-off open-top bus, because none is confirmed in the city.
Visiting Al Fateh Grand Mosque with a guide
Non-Muslim visitors are paired with a multilingual guide for a tour of about 45 minutes that covers prayer, calligraphy, the dome and Bahraini social history. It is free, with sign-up at the visitor desk. Secondary sources give visiting hours of 09:00 to 16:00, Saturday to Thursday, with no visits on Fridays or during prayer, so confirm before travelling. Women need an abaya and headscarf, supplied at no charge on site, and men need long trousers. This is an active place of worship, so speak quietly and ask before photographing anyone.
Guided time on the Pearling Path
The UNESCO-listed Pearling Path in Muharraq joins 17 historic buildings, three offshore oyster beds and Bu Maher Fort. Guides describe the three working roles of the pearl economy: the divers (ghawwas), the boat captains (nokhada) and the merchants (tawwash), and how cultured pearls from Japan undercut the trade in the 1930s. Visitor centres run 10:00 to 18:00 and close on Tuesdays, and one tourism page says 09:00, so arrive after 10:00 to be safe. Details are at pearlingpath.bh .
Museum desks
The Qal’at al-Bahrain museum desk lends audioguides and arranges free guided tours. The site is open Tuesday to Sunday from 08:00 to 20:00 and closed on Mondays. The National Museum is closed on Tuesdays. Fees at both are about BD 2, but sources differ slightly, so confirm at the ticket window.
Coach and minibus day tours
Companies such as Visit Bahrain and Tejwal Bahrain run set routes. A full day often takes in Bahrain Fort, the National Museum, the potters of A’ali, the Royal Camel Farm at Janabiyah and the Tree of Life. Reported prices run from about BD 20 to BD 35 per person with transport, a guide and entry fees. Ask exactly what is included, and whether a tour departs if too few people book.
Etiquette on any tour
- Cover shoulders and knees at every cultural site.
- Photograph museums and historic buildings freely, but never government, military or security sites, such as the naval base in Juffair or coastal radar towers.
- From June to September, book the earliest departure. Outdoor sites pass 40C, so carry water and use shade breaks.
- Pay in dinars. Cards work in most places, but small notes help at stalls and cafes.
