Guided Visits in Nakuru County

Dated 31 October 2026: Kenya sits at Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” in the US State Department system, and an Ebola outbreak is being reported in Nairobi. Nakuru is not named among the areas the US or UK governments advise against, and the CDC rates Kenya at Level 1. Read the UK FCDO guidance and the CDC notice before paying a deposit.

Booking a guide saves effort at some Nakuru sites and adds little at others. Here is what to ask for each of the five main visits.

Park game drive

Is the vehicle closed? Lake Nakuru National Park is for vehicles only, and the Kenya Wildlife Service sells no walking, cycling or boat product here.
Does the price include the park fee? The fee is per person for 24 hours and one entry. A non-resident adult pays USD 90, and a child aged 5 to under 18 pays USD 45.
Does it include the vehicle fee? A car under six seats pays KSh 600 a day.
How is the park fee paid? KWS takes payment online through KWSPay, and cash at the gate cannot be counted on.

A good driver-guide knows where black and white rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes and buffalo have been that day. Lions and leopards are present. Four of the Big Five live in the park; elephants do not.

Hyrax Hill

Ask whether a bird-walk programme is running, since these need booking ahead with the National Museums of Kenya.
Check which fee category you fall into. Adults pay KSh 500 from outside Africa, KSh 400 as a resident or visitor from elsewhere in Africa, and KSh 100 as a Kenyan or East African citizen.
Allow time for the three galleries (ethnography, the excavation itself and natural history) and the short walk uphill.

John Sutton found three Sirikwa houses at the second excavation. The first excavation has Neolithic burials and later stone enclosures.

Lord Egerton Castle

Ask whether a guide will be on site. A visitor in a Business Daily report paid KSh 250 and found none.
Ask the current fee, because quoted prices run from KSh 100 to 860 for Kenyans and USD 5 to 60 for foreign visitors.
The castle is at Ngata farm near Njoro, about 15 km off the Nakuru to Eldoret road, so ask about transport.

Menengai Crater

Ask for a local guide, and agree the route (about 4 km round trip from the viewpoint, or about 7 km across the caldera) and the price before you go.
Ask about conditions. Steep ash, flash floods after rain and crime on isolated paths are the risks.
The folk account of the name is that it refers to a battle in the 1850s.

Kariandusi Prehistoric Site

Near Gilgil, run by the National Museums of Kenya, known for Acheulean handaxes. Ask on arrival about entry.
