Kenya With Kids by Age Group

A four-year-old and a sixteen-year-old want very different things from Kenya, and park fees change at both ends of that range. Matching the day to the child’s age keeps both the budget and the mood intact.

Under 3: short and close

Under-threes are free at the Giraffe Centre in Karen, open 9:00 to 17:00. Pellet-feeding from the raised platform is calm and close to the car. Aim for before 11:00, since weekday crowds peak between 11:00 and 13:00. Skip the long drives at this age.

Ages 3 to 8: giraffes, elephants and one park drive

Children 3 to 12 pay KES 750 at the Giraffe Centre, against KES 1,500 for non-resident adults. Ages 9 to 12: the first real safari

The Maasai Mara charges US$50 for ages 9 to 17 and nothing under 9. Under-nines enter free, so a first Mara trip can wait for a few more years. The drive from Nairobi takes 5 to 6 hours each way, so many families take the roughly 45-minute flight from Wilson Airport instead and stay 2 to 3 nights.
